Antiviral creams may reduce healing time, but these must be applied at the very first sign of an outbreak. Docosanol cream (Abreva) is available over the counter. Prescription creams include acyclovir (Zovirax) and penciclovir (Denavir).
A cold sore is a viral infection and a strain of the herpes simplex virus that can be passed from person to person. The herpes virus associated with a cold sore or fever blister is called the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1) or herpes labilais and is not to be confused with the genital herpes virus (HSV-2).
Because peppermint oil is all-natural, there are few side effects. You can soak a cotton ball in the oil, and dab it onto the area several times a day for best results. However, if you have sensitive skin, you may want to use a carrier oil. The menthol in peppermint oil can be too strong for some people. Diluting it slightly can provide the right amount of cooling relief.
HSV spreads through contact with sores or body fluids. Even without obvious sores, the virus is usually present on the lips of an infected person. So kissing remains a major way that the virus is transmitted to other people. HSV-1 is also found in saliva, so sharing drinking glasses or eating utensils can spread the infection. Genital infection with HSV-1 can occur after oral sex.
I have found in the past that abreva and the lysine jelly, plus icing were always my best bet, but only if I could get to it immediately after the tingling started, and continue for days. I recently started using tea tree oil, applied directly. It cut it down to just two days– really only one uncomfortable, but not painful, day– and kept it from every being apparent or obvious to anyone else. Heaven! And so much more reasonably priced than abreva. Now I have little bottles in my car, my office, and my home for the next time I feel one comin gon.
Maintain Distance – During the outbreak, you have to keep your distance. This is critical if you know friends or family members who have a weak immune system as their chances of being infected with oral herpes are higher. If you come into contact with someone who has a strong immune system, maybe they won’t be infected.
Cold sores are really . If you have a cold sore, it’s very easy to infect another person with HSV-1. The virus spreads through — through skin contact or contact with oral or genital secretions (like through kissing). Although the virus is most contagious when a sore is present, it can still be passed on even if you can’t see a sore. HSV-1 can also be spread by sharing a cup, eating utensils, or lip balm or lipstick with someone who has it.

Herpes infections, no matter where they occur first, have a tendency to recur in more or less the same place. Such recurrences may happen often (for example, several times per year) or only occasionally. You would know that you have herpes if you have an outbreak or if a doctor performs a blood test to tell if you have been infected with it. Most adults have been infected with oral or genital herpes and never know it.
you failed to mention the number one thing. The first thing you do when you feel the tingling or the sore coming on is the load up on Thousands of milligrams of lysine!! if you catch it in time the Sore will go away and It’ll never come out.
The onset of a cold sore will happen in stages so having an understanding of what these stages are and what to expect will help you. You will then be able to take the necessary steps to keep discomfort to a minimum and to keep the virus from spreading.
According to Dr. Charles Zugerman, associate of clinical dermatology at Northwestern University Medical School, stress is one of the primary triggers of cold sore outbreaks. “When stress, or any other factor compromises a person’s immune system, the virus travels from the nerve roots up to the skin area, causing lesions to form,” says Zugerman.
I’m curious to know if anyone else is less concerned about the actual sore itself and has more issues with the effects of the actual virus? Almost every time the virus flares, I feel terrible. My lymph nodes are swollen and painful, my throat feels raw, I have a low grade fever and ache all over, I’m exhausted and the nerves in my face feel inflamed and on and on with the symptoms. I never hear anyone else mention this. Am I the only one?
After this first infection, the virus remains dormant (inactive) in the nerves of the face. In some people, the virus becomes active again from time to time. When this happens, cold sores appear. HSV-1 can get active again because of a cold or fever.

I tried the nail polish remover. Clean the affected area with a swab with peroxide then hold a swab of cotton ball with the nail polish remover on the sore for about 5-7 minutes. It will sting but you will be pleased with the result. You may want to put some tea-tree oil on the area after this treatment. My results were great hope yours will be too! Ps: wish I knew this earlier; have been trying different remedies for the last three days without success.
Topical zinc oxide cream (Desitin, Dr. Smith’s, Triple Paste) may shorten the duration of cold sores. In a 2001 study, cold sores treated with zinc oxide went away, on average, one-and-a-half days sooner than those treated with placebo. Zinc oxide also reduced blistering, soreness, itching, and tingling.
It is possible to transfer the different viruses to other areas of the body. HSV1 (or cold sores) can be transferred to the genitals through oral sex. In the same way, HSV2 (or genital herpes) can be transferred to the mouth.
Apply a warm or cold compress. Sometimes cold sores can become extremely painful, even leading to headaches and other related pains. Hold a hot water bottle or a bag of ice wrapped in a towel up to your lip for 20 minutes. The warm or cool temperature will help ease the pain.
In a few people, cold sores will be associated with painful skin lumps on the front of the legs known as “erythema nodosum.” Erythema nodosum can be self-limited and usually goes away on its own in three to six weeks. If this happens, the person should be seen by a doctor to find out if prescription medications might make the condition go away faster.
Mix one tablespoon of licorice root powder to ½ teaspoon of fresh water, or however much you need to get the consistency of cream you want, making sure to add in small increments. Another option is to mix it with petroleum jelly, which on its own can help speed up the healing process of cold sores. If you opt for this, start with a teaspoon of the petroleum jelly and mix it with the licorice root. You can work your way up to your desired consistency from there. Gently dab (a cotton swab is handy for this) a thin layer over the sore, making sure to get it completely covered. Leave it on for at least several hours, or overnight if possible.
Apply topical cream to combat pain and symptoms. Most topical treatments only provide symptomatic relief, and do not in fact accelerate the healing process, so keep that in mind. Try the following topical treatments:
Docosanol stops the virus in its tracks. This prevents the cold sore from spreading and growing. So, the sooner you apply the treatment, the better. If you apply it early on, it will start to take care of the cold sore in just 24 hours.
Most pediatricians and primary care providers are very familiar with cold sores and their treatment. Most cases do not need the services of a dermatologist (skin specialist). An infectious-disease specialist is often consulted in complicated cases, such as herpes encephalitis or herpes in a person with a weak immune system. The care of an ophthalmologist (eye specialist) is important in managing ocular herpes, or herpes keratitis.
What are the infections cold sores stem from? A cold sore develops as a result of the herpes simplex virus, which is an infection that may cause only a single cold sore or an outbreak of several cold sores. Fever blisters are typically caused by herpes simplex virus type 1, and they can be spread by kissing and sharing face towels, cups, spoons or forks when the sore is present.
Interesting article. Just wanted to ad.. I would not suggest putting Aloe straight from the plant on your lip, I got the tinest amount on the tip of my tounge( yes we tend to lick our lips) and the taste was the most disgusting I ever had, it made me salivate exteremly and burned my throat.
Aciclovir (Zovirax®) can be bought over-the-counter (OTC) at pharmacies. This does not kill the virus but prevents the virus from multiplying. It has little effect on existing blisters but may prevent them from becoming worse. The cream may provide some protection against cold sores caused by sunlight if it is used before exposure. If you use an antiviral cream as soon as symptoms start then the cold sore may not last as long as usual and may be less severe. There is debate as to how well the cream works. Aciclovir has to be applied five times per day for five days.
