HSV is contagious from the time the skin turns itchy or red until the sores heal. Sometimes, the virus can even be spread through the saliva of an infected person, even if that person does not get cold sores. The most contagious period is the time when blisters are present and just after the blisters have ruptured.
Herpes and cold sores are most easily spread when a sore is present, but, the virus can also be spread at other times too. Some people notice itching, tingling or other sensations before they see anything on their skin.

Try to prevent your child from scratching or picking at cold sores. This can spread the virus to other parts of the body, such as fingers and eyes, as well as to other children who touch toys and other objects they play with. Wash hands and clean toys regularly.
The likelihood of the infection being spread can be reduced through behaviors such as avoiding touching an active outbreak site, washing hands frequently while the outbreak is occurring, not sharing items that come in contact with the mouth, and not coming into close contact with others (by avoiding kissing, oral sex, or contact sports).
A more serious complication is ocular herpes, which causes sores and severe pain around the eye. Ocular herpes is also caused by autoinoculation. If untreated, ocular herpes can lead to serious eye damage or even blindness.
If you or your child develop a painful sore on the eyelid, around the eye or complain about pain in the eye itself when he or she has a cold sore, you should see the doctor immediately, since this may be ocular herpes.
Several studies have investigated the efficacy of oral antiviral medication in the treatment of cold sores. The medication must be taken when symptoms first appear in order to be effective. Study results vary, but most suggest that antiviral medications reduce the duration of symptoms by one or two days, especially when taken at higher doses.
Kissing is a common form of transmission of HSV, and estimates suggest that about half the population has been infected with HSV-1. But not everyone who has been infected will develop cold sores. Genetics may play a role in determining who does or doesn’t get cold sores; a study in 2008 identified six genes that may increase a person’s risk of getting cold sores.
Abreva as soon as I feel the tingle & I will NOT even have a breakout. I’ve had these ever since I can remember, with 30 years of experience , abreva has been the only thing that works (for me at least).
Apply 1/2 tsp (2.5 ml) aloe vera gel directly to the cold sore using a cotton swab. Let it stay on. The best gel is the one right from the plant, which is easy to find and lasts for a long time. Break off a fleshy leaf and apply the gel right to your cold sore.
Interesting article. Just wanted to ad.. I would not suggest putting Aloe straight from the plant on your lip, I got the tinest amount on the tip of my tounge( yes we tend to lick our lips) and the taste was the most disgusting I ever had, it made me salivate exteremly and burned my throat.
Apply an ice cube to the cold sore. Hold an ice cube or ice pack directly on the cold sore for a few minutes to reduce inflammation and numb pain. If you’re using an ice cube, consider wrapping in a towel for your own comfort. Press the icy surface to the cold sore until the cold has numbed the pain and remove it shortly after. Do not leave on for extended periods of time. Repeat this procedure once every one to three hours.
Coconut Oil. Nothing works better. Nothing. Virgin, cold-pressed, non-refined coconut oil. Two tablespoons every day with juice. If one starts to form, dab some on with a swab and watch it disappear in a matter of minutes. It’s the miracle cure. You can thank me later =).
You should call your doctor immediately if you develop any eye symptoms during a cold sore outbreak. Infections caused by the herpes simplex virus can lead to permanent vision loss when they’re not treated promptly.
You can drink some tea, but it is best to steep the tea and apply it directly to the cold sore. In fact, you can just use the tea bag after it cools a bit because a hot tea bag can do more damage. Apply it directly to the cold sore and hold it there for at least five minutes.
There is no cure for cold sores. The herpes simplex virus hides deep in nerve roots and cannot be wiped out by medicines that are currently on the market. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration warns that there are products that falsely advertise that they are getting rid of herpes for good, but these claims are fraudulent. The virus will continue to live in the nerve root despite treatment, and most people will continue to get cold sores off and on throughout their life.
Prevention includes avoiding kissing or using the personal items of a person who is infected. A zinc oxide, anesthetic, or antiviral cream appears to decrease the duration of symptoms by a small amount. Antiviral medications may also decrease the frequency of outbreaks.
The antiviral constituents in peppermint oil make it a great tool for healing cold sores. A 2013 study published in Phytomedicine tested peppermint oil’s inhibitory activity against HSV-1 and HSV-2. Researchers found that peppermint oil exhibited high levels of virucidal activity against both HSV-1 and HSV-2.
Dip a clean cotton ball it in about 3% of hydrogen peroxide and apply it on the cold sores. Relax for a few minutes, and dry the area with a clean washcloth. Repeat this practice for three days three times a day.
Most pediatricians and primary care providers are very familiar with cold sores and their treatment. Most cases do not need the services of a dermatologist (skin specialist). An infectious-disease specialist is often consulted in complicated cases, such as herpes encephalitis or herpes in a person with a weak immune system. The care of an ophthalmologist (eye specialist) is important in managing ocular herpes, or herpes keratitis.
Arginine is a protein that is a critical building block for creating new herpes viruses. Lysine, another protein, has proven helpful in healing and preventing cold sores. Lysine does this by replacing some of the arginine in the cells, thus reducing or preventing the cells ability to create clones of the virus.

I felt the tingling slightly after midnight on New Years Day. I did the milk, the baking soda, neosporin, acyclovir, hydrogen peroxide and I also went out and bought the liquid Benadryl and liquid antacid and mixed and applied a few times each day as mentioned in a prior comment and this combination worked beautifully. It is barely noticeable today and it hasn’t even been 48 hours. This is by far the best I’ve treated a cold sore and I’ve had them for years and years usually only one, maybe two, outbreaks a year but I’m 6 months pregnant and this is the second one in 3 months. I got super stressed out and it came out immediately. If you try this combination as soon as you feel the tingle and see the redness you can prevent the pussy like boils that usually pop up and scab over. When I applied these things I’d say I left each on for several minutes maybe 5 at the most with exception to the acyclovir which I would put on with a little neosporin after using all the other methods. I really think it was the Benadryl/Pepto mix that made the big difference in th size and pussiness that usually occurs. I’m happy with the results, I think it should be completely gone by Monday!
Avoid kissing and oral sex. Since the herpes simplex virus is highly contagious, you should avoid kissing or engaging in oral sex during an outbreak (i.e., when you have a cold sore) until it is fully healed. Engaging in oral sex can spread the herpes virus to the genitals and it’s possible to contract type-2 herpes simplex from an infected person. Herpes outbreaks are not always obvious and your partner may be contagious without you knowing it.
If you have an aloe plant, breaking off a leaf to get out the healing gel is sufficient. It’s the most natural way to get the soothing benefits. However, there are also dozens of creams, ointments, and gels on the market containing aloe vera. You can even find lip balms with the popular ingredient, which can great to apply directly to a cold sore on the mouth.
Preventing self-infection is simple. Do not touch the area during an outbreak. If you do, wash your hands as soon as possible with soap and warm water. This will help prevent the virus from spreading further.
About a day or two after you feel the initial tingling phase, your cold sore will typically move to the blistering phase. This is when one or more blisters filled with clear fluid appear on the surface of the skin. The skin around and under the blisters will be red. The blisters may appear on your mouth or inside of it, including in your throat.
Around day 4 or 5 the blisters burst, which leaves a shallow ulcer. The cold sore will begin to dry out from here and until day 10. When dry, the cold sore may crack, which can delay the healing process.
Antiviral tablets may be prescribed for cold sores. If you get an unacceptable number of outbreaks, talk to your doctor. Antiviral tablets are a more effective way of treating and preventing cold sores than antiviral creams.
