Maintain Distance – During the outbreak, you have to keep your distance. This is critical if you know friends or family members who have a weak immune system as their chances of being infected with oral herpes are higher. If you come into contact with someone who has a strong immune system, maybe they won’t be infected.
Avoid skin-to-skin contact. When you have a cold sore outbreak, you are highly contagious and the virus can be easily spread to another person. Avoid kissing or having your cold sore come in contact with someone else.
Take care of your immune system by taking vitamins and drinking white and green tea. White and green teas are treated gently and not overly processed, so they retain most of their beneficial antioxidants. They’ll therefore help keep cold sores from forming in the first place.
Manage your stress levels. Progressive relaxation and creative visualization will be of assistance with stress anxiety or depression. There are also many herbal remedies that you can use to deal with stress.
If your child develops a headache, combined with confusion, seizure or fever during a cold sore outbreak: This could signal a dangerous brain infection caused by the virus, including or encephalitis.
I wholeheartedly agree. L-Lysine pills coupled with Tea Tree Oil stops cold sores in their tracks if you catch it soon enough. I’ve had several that have never had the chance to really grow or “blossom” and all evidence was going in 2 days or so. This last bout (3 places!) sprung up overnight, so it was a little too late when I woke up; but the pills and TTO are keeping it from getting worse…and trust me, I’ve had worse.

Studies have tested the effectiveness of lemon balm as a way of treating the herpes simplex virus. These studies have shown that it may help to speed up healing time, and can sometimes keep a cold sore from returning. It’s no wonder lemon balm is such a popular solution.
In some people, primary herpes is associated with fever, swollen lymph nodes, and bleeding gums, together with painful ulcers around the mouth (gingivostomatitis) and sore throat. These signs and symptoms may last several days. Difficulty in eating and drinking may lead to dehydration. The sores heal completely in two to six weeks, usually without scarring. Virus can be recovered from the saliva for days after the lesions heal. Primary herpes usually occurs during childhood.
Keep the affected area as clean as possible. Don’t wash the scab along with the rest of your face. It should be washed separately, preferably with an antibacterial soap. Be very gentle with the sore, so it doesn’t get picked off in the process. If you use any cloths or towels to wash/dry the area, don’t use them again until they have been washed.
Currently, there is no cure or vaccine for herpes simplex virus. Avoiding risk factors, such as sunburn and stress, can help prevent additional outbreaks. Cold sores will usually heal within two weeks without treatment. However, there are established cold sore treatments available to help decrease healing time, reduce pain, and in specific cases, suppress the recurrence of the virus.
I was introduced to Colloidal Silver by my Biomedicine professor and I will say, it is the one thing I will keep in my bag at all times. You need to buy at least 50pmm (parts per million) or I feel… Read more
After the first infection, the virus settles in a nearby nerve sheath and remains there for the rest of your life. For most of the time, the virus lies dormant (inactive) and causes no symptoms. However, in some people the virus becomes active from time to time. When activated, the virus multiplies and travels down the nerve sheath to cause cold sore blisters around the mouth. Some people have cold sores often, others only now and then. It is not clear what causes the dormant virus to become active. Some things that may trigger the virus to activate and cause a cold sore include:
Cold sores are the result of the virus reactivating in the body. Once HSV-1 has entered the body, it never leaves. The virus moves from the mouth to remain latent in the central nervous system. In approximately one-third of people, the virus can “wake up” or reactivate to cause disease. When reactivation occurs, the virus travels down the nerves to the skin where it may cause blisters (cold sores) around the lips, in the mouth or, in about 10% of cases, on the nose, chin, or cheeks.
Other treatment options such as lemon balm, L-lysine supplements, citrus bioflavonoids, Lactobacillus acidophilus and bulgaricus, vitamin C, vitamin E oil, and vitamin B12 have also been considered in the potential treatment of herpes simplex virus, but there is no good clinical evidence to support these treatments. Lemon balm may have some anti-herpes properties, but it is impossible to tell if it is effective in affected people from the few laboratory experiments that have been published. L-lysine similarly has limited laboratory data suggesting antiviral properties and has been touted for reducing recurrence of herpes. Unfortunately, results in patients with cold sores have been highly variable; and there are no high quality studies suggesting benefit.
It should not be confused with conditions caused by other viruses in the herpesviridae family such as herpes zoster, which is caused by varicella zoster virus. The differential diagnosis includes hand, foot and mouth disease due to similar lesions on the skin.
Once you are able to get rid of this problem, there are high chances that the virus may attack you once again. Therefore, for permanent solution you may consider this program, especially created for Cold Sores Breakouts.
A fever blister is extension of the herpes virus. No, I don’t mean the sexually transmitted type you get on your genitals. The Herpes simplex virus known as (HSV) is very common and often appears in or around the mouth – the virus is what causes the fever blisters.
Genital herpes simplex was not always stigmatised. It was merely a cold sore in an unusual place until the 1970s. As late as 1975, a study of “Psychological morbidity in a clinic for sexually transmitted disease” does not mention herpes simplex because at that time, no significant morbidity problem (i.e. mental anxiety or illness) was associated with the virus.
Avoid foods that cause outbreaks. Many people are sensitive to certain foods that cause cold sores to appear when they are eaten in excess. If you tend to get cold sores easily, limit or stop eating the following foods:
I have been getting them on my lip since I was 19 and just recently started getting them on my chin at the age of 36. I have tried everything. I know this is terrible but I started using a q-tip soaked in bleach. It kills it instantly. Then I use petroleum jelly to keep it from drying up. It’s gone within days instead of weeks. Bleach is not supposed to be used on your skin but it’s the only thing I’ve found, besides Thieves oil, that kills the virus instantly.
Once a person to exposed to HSV-1, the cold sore typically appears in about a week, and the virus can be reactivated later in life, causing more cold sore outbreaks. HSV-1 can be activated after a period of stress or illness, as a result of poor nutrition, when dealing with an upper respiratory infection, when menstruating, or even after sunlight exposure. Dental procedures that stretch the lip may also trigger the virus to reappear. (14)
HSV spreads through contact with sores or body fluids. Even without obvious sores, the virus is usually present on the lips of an infected person. So kissing remains a major way that the virus is transmitted to other people. HSV-1 is also found in saliva, so sharing drinking glasses or eating utensils can spread the infection. Genital infection with HSV-1 can occur after oral sex.
There are a number of ways to lower your risk of picking up or passing on a cold sore and to prevent recurrence. However, it has to be said that triggers for the cold sore virus may differ from person to person:
Looks aside, cold sores hurt. They can really, really hurt. Think about what they are-little fluid filled boo-boos that burst, blister, and form a crust. Kind of like constipation, they aren’t taken very seriously. If you complain about constipation pain-which can land you in the E.R., by the way-all people think is “poop” and then they tune out. With cold sores, most people think “herpes” and then move on-especially since cold sores are so common. To numb the pain that some people just don’t understand (and the injustice of it all) try holding an ice cube directly on the sore for as long as possible, and then put on a dab of petroleum jelly. The jelly will help keep bacteria out, and will lessen that tight, skin-splitting sensation that sometimes happens when a blister gets too dry, as it might after using an ice cube. It’s along the same lines of how licking chapped lips makes them worse.
In my family we always used alum on cold sores and canker sores. It is a cooking spice. You put it on the sore. It has a bitter taste but you wake up in the morning and its gone. I have never found anything that works faster. My grate-grandmother was full of stuff like this.
Sores may develop as late as 20 days after exposure to the virus. Once the virus enters your body, it may emerge years later at or near the original site of entry. About two days before an attack you may experience itching or sensitivity at the site. The virus may be triggered by certain foods, stress, fever, colds, allergies, sunburn and menstruation.

Cold sores always seem to appear at the most inconvenient of times. And Murphy’s Law would dictate that such instances would occur the night before you bump into an ex boyfriend with his new flawless girlfriend or, when you’re just about to go on a hot date.
If this stage of the cold sore is painful or bothersome, you can take OTC pain relievers like acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil). Creams with lidocaine or benzocaine may also provide relief.
More than half the U.S. population have the virus, and it’s with you for life. It’s a condition with no known cure, so it must be ‘managed.’ We’re going to provide 27 ways of getting rid of cold sores in one day (if you take action early).
