You can drink some tea, but it is best to steep the tea and apply it directly to the cold sore. In fact, you can just use the tea bag after it cools a bit because a hot tea bag can do more damage. Apply it directly to the cold sore and hold it there for at least five minutes.
In addition, the amino acid lysine reduces viral replication and can be taken as a daily dose (500mg) for prevention, or three times a day to reduce symptoms. Vitamin C and zinc are also helpful in reducing the frequency and severity of cold sores.

Still, it doesn’t feel or look pleasant to have a crusty scab on your lip, or anywhere around your mouth. It can draw immediate attention to the sore, and cause embarrassment. That’s why you may prefer to cover up a scab with a Compeed patch.
Did you know that 90 percent of the population gets at least one cold sore in a lifetime, and 40 percent of American adults repeatedly get cold sores? They can be painful, uncomfortable and downright unattractive, beginning as a blister and eventually forming a crust. Cold sores are commonly mistaken for canker sores, especially in children. Canker sores, however, involve only the mucous membrane, and they’re never on the outside of the mouth.
Mince the garlic finely and then ‘smash’ about three cloves to make a paste. Apply the paste directly to the blister Let it sit for about fifteen minutes. If you have sensitive skin, you may want to reduce the period of exposure. You can repeat the process up to three times per day.
This is because tomatoes are one of the highest foods in l-arginine (the opposite of l-lysine) which speeds up your bodies production of the virus, or so I’ve heard. All I know is to avoid l-arginine rich foods if you have a coldsore or are about to. I love tomatoes but am careful when I enjoy them! Maybe you could try some l-lysine to help counteract the affects!
Yes, the same milk you drink can help to speed up the healing process of fever blisters. This is especially true when it comes to whole milk. You most likely know that milk contains protein. But, one of those proteins, immune gamma globulin, works as an antibody within your system.
Honey has the potent antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties to kill off HSV infection. It blocks the virus to survive and reproduce. Moreover, you can use honey as a moisturizer to rejuvenate your skin after the infection is gone.
One of the more random natural remedies for cold sores that you can use is licorice. Glycyrhizic acid, an ingredient in licorice root, has been shown in some studies to stop the virus cells in their nasty little tracks-or at least counteract the symptoms of them. This is thanks to its anti-inflammatory and anti-viral properties. A way to glean something positive from this isn’t to go munch on a bunch of licorice whips, but rather get some licorice powder, and make a cream. You can also try drinking licorice tea daily, though that doesn’t seem as effective as topical treatment.
The main ingredients are Camphor and Phenol. Together, they have antiseptic properties and work well as powerful pain relievers. While it’s meant to be used before a blister shows, don’t rule it out at any stage of a cold sore.
Using rubbing alcohol to diminish a cold sore quickly is easy. Either soak a cotton swab or the end of a Q-Tip in the solution and gently dab it directly against the sore. There is no need to rinse it away. It will evaporate on its own. This also gives it time to penetrate into the sore and get rid of any bacteria.
Thank you for all of the great suggestions! I have suffered these stupid things since childhood, and none of the conventional treatments have worked for me. I am always at the mercy of time, usually 2 weeks minimum, to heal them. Abreva only brings them on faster and makes them blister up worse, and camphor does absolutely nothing to help. I have heard of most of these treatments with the ice and milk technique working best to reduce inflammation and duration, but the vanilla, peroxide, peppermint oil, and alcohol are all new to me. I have had a drastic reduction of outbreaks over the years, but I still get one if I get too stressed, sunburned, or sustain any injury to my lips. Currently my lip has been itching like the devil for almost 2 days with no blister forming so I immediately started a prevention regime using some of the new suggestions. I must say that the vanilla made the itching stop immediately. Hopefully I can incorporate several other things to boost my immunity and thwart an outbreak this winter.
There’s no parallel to apple cider vinegar in home remedies. There’s a versatile practical and therapeutic benefits of ACV or apple cider vinegar. From time immemorial vinegar is a potent remedy for hundreds of health problems.
Vanilla is one of the best-known home remedies for cold sore treatment. Pure vanilla extract is known for its medicinal value. Vanilla is also rich in alcohol levels, which makes it difficult for the virus to grow and thrive, and which means it will be effective in treating the sore (12).
In Europe we have a salve called Fucidin. There is also a crème but I find the salve (zalf) works best and has saved my skin from any kind of scarring…in fact, people tell me that my skin looks great!
I may get a cold sore every now and then meaning it can be years. Usually mines come from upset stomach when i eat a lot of junk (processed foods, sweets)and no veggies. For example woke up with one of New Years day! Happy New years to me! But it came from eating a lot of different stuff over the holidays. Basically just going in on whatever i get my hands on cookies candy drinks food etc. Usually to go along with it i have upset stomach and diarrhea But i can get rid of mines in a few days. But it takes constant care. Campho Phenique gel with drying action and my new remedy i researched was apple cider vinegar. The key is to keep it dry as possible. It is uncomfortable but it helps. Do not use vaseline! When it starts to scab then i may use some antibiotic ointment to finish healing.
Over-the-counter (OTC) topical medications: Most topical OTC products provide symptomatic relief only. This means that they make people feel better but they do not decrease healing time. Using topical anesthetics that contain benzocaine (5%-20%), lidocaine (0.5%-4%), tetracaine (2%) or dibucaine (0.25%-1%) will help relieve burning, itching, and pain. Examples are Lipactin gel and Zilactin. It is important to keep in mind that these topical agents have a short duration of action, usually only lasting 20-30 minutes. Skin protectants, such as allantoin, petrolatum, and dimethicone-containing products, help keep the lesion moist and prevent cracking of the lesion. Sunscreen-containing lip balms may also help to prevent additional outbreaks if the sun is a precipitating factor. For additional pain relief, using ibuprofen (Advil) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) may be beneficial. Do not apply any topical steroids, such as hydrocortisone, to the lesions.
Symptoms of fever blisters often vary. They do eventually go away on their own, once they’ve gone through the full cold sore life cycle. Unfortunately, this typically takes about 10-12 days, sometimes longer. The first outbreak, known as the primary infection, is always worse.
The virus is spread from person to person by kissing, by close contact with herpes lesions, or from saliva even when sores are not present. Infected saliva is a common means of virus transmission. The contagious period is highest when people have active blisters or moist sores. Once the blisters have dried and crusted over (within a few days), the risk of contagion is significantly lessened. HSV can also be spread through personal items that are contaminated with the virus, such as lipstick, utensils, and razors. Despite popular myth, catching herpes (cold sores) from surfaces, towels, or washcloths is a very low risk, since the virus does not usually survive long on dry surfaces.
This post is for recent help from Dave and the suggestion to use the hydrocortisone. Truly a life saver! I’m a cold sore sufferer for years and this absolutely worked. I have tried everything. I was 24 hours in to this one and it still worked. Cold sore never got big/pussy and therefore never scabbed. I really just wanted to thank him for this miracle cure!!! You have no idea how happy this made me!!
You may notice a tingling or burning sensation on your lips or face several days before a cold sore develops. This is the best time to start treatment. Once the sore forms, you’ll see a raised, red blister full of fluid. It will usually be painful and tender to the touch. There may be more than one sore present.
3) Diet. One of my goals 4 years ago was to eat a salad/day. Variety is key. I’ve always felt that eating a vast variety of vegetables, the better your immune system will be. If you miss a vitamin one day, you have the ability to make up for it with a new food the next day. Kale, celery, avocados, broccoli are all great foods to include on your salads.
Herpes simplex virus (HSV) can cause infections that affect the mouth, face, genitals, skin, buttocks, and the anal area. It is one of the most common chronic viral infections in humans. prevalence of HSV-1 (oral herpes) infection is 67% of adults worldwide and is higher than the prevalence of HSV-2 (genital herpes).
Despite the name, when you get painful blisters called cold sores, don’t blame your cold. Cold sores are caused by a virus, but not the kind that makes you sniffle and sneeze. Instead, they happen because of an infection with the herpes simplex virus (HSV).
No method eradicates herpes virus from the body, but antiviral medications can reduce the frequency, duration, and severity of outbreaks. Analgesics such as ibuprofen and paracetamol (acetaminophen) can reduce pain and fever. Topical anesthetic treatments such as prilocaine, lidocaine, benzocaine, or tetracaine can also relieve itching and pain.
A study published in Alternative Therapies for Health and Medicine found that zinc oxide/glycine cream is an effective treatment for an oral herpes infection. Participants who began treatment with a zinc oxide/glycine cream within 24 hours of experiencing signs and symptoms of a cold sore noticed a significantly shorter duration of cold sore lesions than the subjects treated with a placebo cream. I found that tomatoes are my cause, they are a zero calorie snack and a great tool in helping me lose weight. Anytime I feel hungry, I reach for tomato. But I ended up aggravating my cold sores. The best thing I found in speeding up the healing process was to take a sterilized needle and a tissue and slowly pop the cold sores like you would do with a blister, leaving the surrounding skin intact. It drains out the water and keeps them from popping our their own. After that I put salt directly on them daily, and several times a day, anytime I feel they are getting to moist. A cold sore that would take two weeks to heal is better in a week. For the pain I don’t know what to do for it though. I will try anything, except more drugs. I wish there was a way that I can continue to enjoy my zero calorie snack without the after effects.
