The condition is caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and is highly contagious, especially if the blisters are oozing fluid. However, the virus does not always cause sores and may sometimes stay dormant permanently. The virus spreads through skin-to-skin contact, and oral sex can spread genital herpes to the mouth area.
Children usually can go to child care or school with an active infection, but your pediatrician may suggest keeping them home if they drool a lot or are having their very first HSV outbreak. See When to Keep Your Child Home from Child Care for more information.
Cold sores are caused by the Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV 1). HSV 2 causes a small percentage of cold sores. The virus is spread between individual children by means of saliva contamination of toys, hands and other objects during play activities or children may pick up the virus by kissing someone who has the virus. The spread of infection can still occur from someone who does not have a visible sore, but has the virus in his or her saliva.
Be Hygienic Always – Sometimes, you can accidentally pass on the herpes virus to other locations on your body like your eyes, nose, or face. I feel it’s important to practice good self-hygiene. A simple habit like washing your hands with soap and water regularly can save you a lot of headache. And don’t be tempted to touch the blisters. This step alone can stop the contagious cold sores from spreading further.
There are many different types of mouth sores than can develop around or in the mouth. Some are painful, some are unsightly and some may be a sign of something more serious. If your mouth sore does not go away within 10 days, you should consult your dentist. If you suspect you have an infection, consult your dentist as soon as possible to eliminate complications.
Cold sores are caused by the herpes virus, which infects a nerve in the facial area. It remains dormant in the root of the nerve. When you are exposed to sun, physical abrasion, or stress the cold sore will react from the root, causing another cold sore. Taking medications like acyclovir and valacyclovir will help with transmission and shortening the duration of symptoms.
There is a risk of infecting the eyes with the cold sore virus if your contact lenses become contaminated. You can prevent this with careful handwashing before handling your contact lenses. If you have disposable lenses and you suspect you have contaminated them, it is probably best to throw them away. If you have any concerns, it may be better to wear your glasses and seek advice from your GP or optician (optometrist).
Use sea salt. You can apply sea salt directly to cold sores on the outside of the mouth or you can gurgle salt water to treat cold sores inside the mouth. With clean hands, press the salt gently into the cold sore and allow it to sit there for around ten minutes before you wash it off. You can do this treatment two or three times a day.
A lesion caused by herpes simplex can occur in the corner of the mouth and be mistaken for angular cheilitis of another cause. Sometimes termed “angular herpes simplex”. A cold sore at the corner of the mouth behaves similarly to elsewhere on the lips. Rather than utilizing antifungal creams, angular herpes simplex is treated in the same way as a cold sore, with topical antiviral drugs.

If your child participates in sports that involve skin-to-skin contact such as wrestling, he or she should sit out during an active cold sore infection. Make sure mats and other equipment are cleaned regularly after use.
Tests are not usually needed to confirm the diagnosis of cold sores. Symptoms of tingling pain followed by the typical blisters that crust around the nose and mouth are usually enough to make the diagnosis.
Herpes can be spread from a cold sore to another area of the body, which is called “autoinoculation.” For example, touching a cold sore on the lip can cause herpes of the finger (herpetic whitlow). Autoinoculation occurs most commonly at the time of primary infection when viral shedding is high and the immune system is still gearing up to contain it. The antibodies that are made after primary infection are usually — but not always — successful in preventing autoinoculation during recurrent attack. To prevent spreading the virus to other parts of the body, it is important to wash hands after touching the sore. One question that is sometimes asked is Do cold sores cause genital herpes or are they contagious to genital areas? Although it is possible to autoinoculate the genital area, most cases of genital herpes are acquired through sexual transmission.
L-lysine supplements help a great deal, but when that all-too familiar tingle appears, I nip it with a colloidal silver spray. I’ve been using colloidal silver for years and it works like a charm. Look for a higher concentration at any health food store.
There are over-the-counter and prescription topical creams and oral medications available that can help reduce the lifespan of a cold sore. Acyclovir is one prescription oral drug that is sometimes used. It works by interfering with viral replication, which happens before a cold sore appears. But viral replication generally occurs before a person shows symptoms, so it’s difficult to judge when acyclovir should be taken. If a cold sore is already present, it may be too late for acyclovir to help, and you’ll just have to ride it out.
I would not recommend peroxide for a fever blister. I did this several years ago and now have a permanent scar on my lower lip. It made the fever blister soft, but it never scabbed over and lasted double the amount of time that it should have lasted. It was a really bad mistake on my part. Now, when I’m out in the sun I have to use heavy duty sunscreen on my lip or I have another huge fever blister in the same area!
There is evidence that using sunscreen on your lips will prevent cold sores caused by sun exposure. Antiviral medicines may prevent cold sores from forming. In certain situations, your dentist or physician may prescribe these medicines. If you expect to encounter a known trigger, a medicine taken in advance can decrease the chance of a cold sore.
The herpes simplex virus in nature is very contagious. Just by touching, the virus can spread to another person. They usually affect inside the mouth and lips. The outbreaks usually happen when you’re exposed to the sun or going through stress. Sometimes, they appear for no apparent cause at all.
I have tried this product and I wish it worked for me like it did for you. It, like the vanilla extract, actually made my cold sore worse and I noticed the product was very sticky. It may not have worked for me due to my sensative skin and medicine issues so please keep this is mind while reading my comment. Please try at your own discresion and not based on exactly how my body reacts. I just want someone who may see this and have the same issue to know that they are not alone.
To get your cold sore to go away at the first sign of symptoms, try Zilactin Cold Sore Relief Gel. Even though it’s less expensive than its counterparts, it still helps to reduce painful symptoms and is a great overnight cure for cold sores (when applied during the prodrome stage).
I have done years of research and understanding and documenting my own triggers. I may only now have a breakout once every year. I take my LLysine pills and I also have cut wheat out of my diet. Wheat has the amino acid arginine that the cold sore virus feeds off of. I have to find my fibre in other ways. So now I am 34 and I only get an outbreak because I am stressed and I have learned to cope with that by exercising. One outbreak a year is better than every two months in my teenage years and 20’s.
Research has shown that licorice root has antiviral and antibacterial abilities. Its antiviral properties help prevent viruses from replicating, while its antibacterial properties inhibit bacterial function. This same study showed that licorice exhibited antifungal activity. Topical licorice root cream is available to treat cold sores.
Herpetic gingivostomatitis Herpetic gingivostomatitis is often the initial presentation during the first herpes infection. It is of greater severity than herpes labialis, which is often the subsequent presentations.

First of all, herpes labialis is most contagious when cold sores are in their weeping stage, so don’t go around sharing utensils, cups, or kisses with someone who has a cold sore. Second, fever, menstruation, stress, and even sun exposure can cause outbreaks, so leading a healthy lifestyle—which includes getting enough sleep and wearing sunscreen—can help.

The herpes simplex virus – or “cold sore virus” – is highly contagious and can be easily passed from person to person by close direct contact. After someone has contracted the virus, it remains inactive (dormant) most of the time.
Complications are more likely to occur in people who have eczema or a condition that weakens their immune system, such as cancer or AIDS. If you do have any of these conditions, contact your doctor if you think you’ve contracted the herpes simplex virus.
Really confused about this because I have read many other places that you shouldn’t eat nuts, broccoli, tomatoes, or spinach and this is suggesting them as sources or Vitamin C and E (#9). I’ve also read that you shouldn’t drink too much orange juice because an overly acidic balance can trigger an outbreak.
Eat nutrient-rich foods. Be sure to get plenty of vitamins and nutrients by eating fruits and vegetables. Eat balanced meals, making sure you eat a lot of leafy greens and other nutrient-rich foods. Take a multivitamin if you’re concerned you aren’t getting enough nutrients.
The following herbs will support your immune system and should be taken in conjunction with the recommendations above: Echinacea, golden seal, cleavers, plantain, bayberry, burdock, huang qi, nettle, wormwood, calendula, myrrh, poke root, dandelion root, licorice
Campho-Phenique is a powerful cold sore treatment. It is a topical gel designed to alleviate the pain and discomfort associated with cold sores instantly. The formula should be used at the first sign of a cold sore. If used properly, it can prevent blisters from forming.
