According to a 2001 study, a topical cream made of rhubarb and sage may be as effective for treating cold sores as the antiviral medication acyclovir (Zovirax) in topical cream form. The study found rhubarb and sage cream helped to heal a cold sore in 6.7 days. Healing time with acyclovir cream was 6.5 days, and healing time using sage cream alone was 7.6 days.

To be effective, these treatments should be applied as soon as the first signs of a cold sore appear – when you feel a tingling, itching or burning sensation around your mouth. Using an antiviral cream after this initial period is unlikely to have much of an effect.

I washed my hands and face, soaked the needle in the rubbing alcohol and popped the blister very early on before it got really huge, I right away soaked the Q-Tip in the rubbing alcohol and then pressed it against the sore. Next thing I did was dab some Toothpaste over the sore.

Docosanol 10% cream (Abreva) is the only over-the-counter product that has been shown to decrease healing time when applied at the first sign of recurrence (for example, a tingling sensation). Docosanol is applied five times per day until the lesion is healed. Possible side effects include rash and itching at the site of application.

I found that most over the counter topical meds like Abreva or Campho. , burned and sometimes, left scars. We now use a natural topical product called SUPER LYSINE, made by Quantum. Amazon sells it, as does Whole Foods and other natural health food stores. It’s amazing at relieving pain and reducing the length of the sores. My 6yr old gets cold sores like her Mom and this is the only thing that doesn’t bother her and works. I also orally take Lysine supplements but I crush them and give them to her, as she hates swallowing pills. I highly recommend the Super Lysine.

Wash your hands throughout the day. We often touch our faces without even realizing it. If you touch anywhere near the area, you could be allowing it to spread from your hands, to other areas of your body, or to other people.

Cold sores can be dangerous for people whose immune systems are weakened (such as infants and people who have cancer or HIV/AIDS) as well as those with eczema. For people with any of these conditions, an infection triggered by a cold sore can even be life threatening.

Usually you would not need to see your GP if you have cold sores. With recurrent bouts of cold sores you will probably come to recognise the symptoms. You should see your GP if you are unsure of the diagnosis, or if the cold sores are not resolving after a week or so. If you have a poor immune system (you are an immunocompromised person) and develop possible cold sores, you should see your GP. You may need tests to confirm the virus, and/or oral antiviral medicines.

Exercise regularly. Exercising several times a week or – even better – every day can help boost your immune system, thereby reducing the risk of recurring outbreaks of cold sores. Even mild to moderate exercises such as walking, yoga, and stretching have incredible general benefits, in addition to reducing the recovery period and alleviating your cold sore symptoms.[28]

What about a cold sore that isn’t on your lip? They aren’t as common, but they can pop up anywhere on your face, like your cheek, chin, or nose. Most people’s cold sores reappear in the same area each time.

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) can cause infections that affect the mouth, face, genitals, skin, buttocks, and the anal area. This article will concentrate on nongenital herpes. Many people acquire the virus and have no symptoms or signs. For others, painful fluid-filled blisters appear near the area where the virus entered the body. Typically, the blisters heal completely but may reappear at some point in the future. In between attacks, the virus resides deep in the roots of the nerves of the involved area. When herpes simplex flare-ups appear in their most common location, around the mouth, chin, and upper lip, people often refer to them as “cold sores” or “fever blisters.” Oral herpes may cause ulcers, fluid-filled blisters, or sores anywhere inside the mouth, including the gums and the tongue. It may also cause sores inside the nose and around the nostrils. Herpes may also affect the eye.

Keeping the blister and the surrounding area moisturized is key in making sure the scab doesn’t crack or split open. One of the best ways to do this safely is with petroleum jelly, like Vaseline. Many over-the-counter topical treatments also contain moisturizing ingredients.

Break off the end of one fleshy, succulent, leaf. Directly apply the gel to your sore. If you absolutely cannot come by a plant, dab a cotton swab in roughly ½ teaspoon aloe vera gel and apply directly. Leave on.

A cold sore is highly contagious until it crusts over and heals, so keep your hands off to avoid spreading the infection. If you use a face towel or cold compress, put it directly in the dirty laundry pile afterward.

Cold sores are caused by a contagious virus called herpes simplex virus (HSV). There are two types of HSV. Type 1 usually causes oral herpes, or cold sores. Type 1 herpes virus infects more than half of the U.S. population by the time they reach their 20s. Type 2 usually affects the genital area.

The herpes simplex virus – or “cold sore virus” – is highly contagious and can be easily passed from person to person by close direct contact. After someone has contracted the virus, it remains inactive (dormant) most of the time.

If you already have a cold sore, prevent the spread of infection by keeping the area clean and leaving it alone. Try not to touch the sore or pick at the crust. It’s also important that you avoid kissing anyone while you have a blister, and don’t share utensils, glasses or towels that make contact with your mouth.

Cold sores are very common. In Britain, about seven in ten people have caught one of the viruses that cause them. Worldwide figures are similar. However, most don’t know, as only one in three will notice any symptoms. Whichever herpes simplex type you have, you could catch the other type in the same place or elsewhere. Infection with a second type often goes unnoticed or the symptoms that appear may be very mild. This is because the antibodies that have developed to fight the first virus also help to control the other one.

I have been getting them on my lip since I was 19 and just recently started getting them on my chin at the age of 36. I have tried everything. I know this is terrible but I started using a q-tip soaked in bleach. It kills it instantly. Then I use petroleum jelly to keep it from drying up. It’s gone within days instead of weeks. Bleach is not supposed to be used on your skin but it’s the only thing I’ve found, besides Thieves oil, that kills the virus instantly.

You don’t have to go dump every single thing you own when you get a cold sore, but like your toothbrush, its best to get rid of some things that come in contact with your lips/mouth area-such as lip balm, or make up tools. In addition to this, wash your hands each and every time you touch, or even think you touch, your cold sore. While you’re always contagious, it’s easiest spread the virus when there’s an open blister and you may keep causes outbreaks if you continue using contaminated items.

While other herbal remedies are an effective one-time treatment for cold sores, tea tree oil is considered the most reliable solution for recurrent attacks, which affect up to 40 percent of the population [26].

You can add more meats and dairy to your diet. But, if you want to find relief fast, a lysine supplement that contains the amino acid is the best way to go. You can purchase a lysine supplement and take it daily to prevent severe flare-ups.

The moment you feel the tingling sensation that precedes a cold sore flare up, start your treatment. Since there is no “cure” sometimes preventative measures work best, and nipping it in the bud seems to help boost the effectiveness of the treatment afterwards well as shorten the sores existence.

Method: Cut up clove fresh garlic (if possible) right into very small portions. Right away mix the portions with the use of a cup of water and consume. You recovery process starts off internally. Moreover, you may also apply some thin garlic slice straight upon the infected area with the help of band-aid.

Chemical peels are performed to reduce fine lines, treat wrinkles, improve the appearance of mild scarring, treat some types of acne, and reduce age spots. During the treatment, a chemical solution is applied to the skin. The skin blisters and eventually peels off.

While some of the over-the-counter creams for cold sore removal are effective, others can cause irritation. They cause the mouth to become inflamed and swollen if you have sensitive skin or develop an allergic reaction.

I use Spirit of Camphor…it’s what’s found in small doses in the over the counter remedies. Cheaper to buy a bottle, use a cotton swab and dab the area. Numbs it for pain, helps dry it up and then add a dab of petroleum jelly.

After entering the body, cold sore viruses tend to remain in your body for the rest of your life. Most of the time, they will exist in a dormant state and if you keep your immune system strong, these viruses will not lead to the formation of cold sores.

I’ve been getting cold sores for over a decade. This is what works for me. At the first sign I begin taking Lysine tablets. Up to 3000 mg a day. I also put rubbing alcohol and tea tree oil to dry it out. Both of these in conjunction with each other help tremendously. I also have a perception that I take as well. Once the cold sore has started to heal I use vitamin e oil. Stay away from foods high in arginine as this will make it worse. Hope it helps.

  1. Test out a small area of your skin with a dab of toothpaste to see how it reacts before using it. Additionally, don’t use gel-style pastes. There are several tubes of toothpaste on the market that don’t contain SLS. If you have sensitive skin, they can be sound options.
When you want to know how to get rid of a cold sore in 24 hours, the above solutions are helpful. Whether you choose a natural product or something over the counter, you can take comfort in knowing you don’t have to live with the discomfort and embarrassment for long.
Treating a cold sore during the tingling phase may reduce its severity and duration, but it won’t prevent the sore from forming. Oral medication is most useful during this phase. The medication can also be used daily to prevent or limit outbreaks.
Use sunscreen. Sun exposure is tough on anyone’s skin, and its especially damaging to people who tend to get cold sores.[4] Protect your skin by wearing sunscreen at all times of the year, not just during the summer. Use lip balm or lipstick with sunscreen so that your lips are protected, too.
