Some people only get one cold sore in their lives and may not realize they are carrying a latent form of the virus. Even if you don’t have a visible cold sore, there’s a chance you can still transmit the virus through your saliva or via oral sex, says Dr. Barry Goldman, the chief of dermatology at New York Downtown Hospital. (An outbreak of HSV-1 in the genital area becomes a form of genital herpes.)

Drinking Echinacea tea will boost your immune system, thus providing immune responses against any cold sore triggers. The herpes simplex virus might be in your body, but remain inactive for life and show no symptoms if your defensive system is healthy and strong enough to fight foreign substances and pathogenic organisms. Echinacea bags are available in the market, and you only have to put one in a cup of hot water at a time and take it. You can also drink green, white or black teas. They act as antioxidants, vital for producing immune responses, and also contain tannins, a substance known to have antiviral properties.
Cold sores are caused by a virus called herpes (say: HUR-peez). Herpes is one of the most common viral infections in the world. The medical name for the specific virus that causes cold sores is herpes simplex.
Cold sores are small blisters that is reddish and a little painful. They are usually on the outer edge of the lip or inside the mouth. Cold sores can appear one at a time or in little bunches. They are filled with fluid but crust over and form a scab before they go away. They last a week or two and usually don’t require any special treatment.
Visible cold sores are contagious, but they may be spread even when they can’t be seen. You can get the herpes simplex virus by coming in contact with infected individuals. This may happen through kissing, sharing cosmetics, or sharing food. Oral sex may spread both cold sores and genital herpes.
No method eradicates herpes virus from the body, but antiviral medications can reduce the frequency, duration, and severity of outbreaks. Analgesics such as ibuprofen and paracetamol (acetaminophen) can reduce pain and fever. Topical anesthetic treatments such as prilocaine, lidocaine, benzocaine, or tetracaine can also relieve itching and pain.
There are generally two chains of thought when it comes to treating cold sores. One is to dry them out, while the other is to keep them moist. Some people say the virus festers in a moist environment, others say it makes no difference and you’ll be uncomfortable with a dry, cracked, split, scab.
Herpes antiviral therapy began in the early 1960s with the experimental use of medications that interfered with viral replication called deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) inhibitors. The original use was against normally fatal or debilitating illnesses such as adult encephalitis, keratitis, in immunocompromised (transplant) patients, or disseminated herpes zoster. The original compounds used were 5-iodo-2′-deoxyuridine, AKA idoxuridine, IUdR, or(IDU) and 1-β-D-arabinofuranosylcytosine or ara-C, later marketed under the name cytosar or cytorabine. The usage expanded to include topical treatment of herpes simplex, zoster, and varicella. Some trials combined different antivirals with differing results. The introduction of 9-β-D-arabinofuranosyladenine, (ara-A or vidarabine), considerably less toxic than ara-C, in the mid-1970s, heralded the way for the beginning of regular neonatal antiviral treatment. Vidarabine was the first systemically administered antiviral medication with activity against HSV for which therapeutic efficacy outweighed toxicity for the management of life-threatening HSV disease. Intravenous vidarabine was licensed for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 1977. Other experimental antivirals of that period included: heparin, trifluorothymidine (TFT), Ribivarin, interferon, Virazole, and 5-methoxymethyl-2′-deoxyuridine (MMUdR). The introduction of 9-(2-hydroxyethoxymethyl)guanine, AKA acyclovir, in the late 1970s raised antiviral treatment another notch and led to vidarabine vs. acyclovir trials in the late 1980s. The lower toxicity and ease of administration over vidarabine has led to acyclovir becoming the drug of choice for herpes treatment after it was licensed by the FDA in 1998. Another advantage in the treatment of neonatal herpes included greater reductions in mortality and morbidity with increased dosages, which did not occur when compared with increased dosages of vidarabine. However, acyclovir seems to inhibit antibody response, and newborns on acyclovir antiviral treatment experienced a slower rise in antibody titer than those on vidarabine.
Research has shown that licorice root has antiviral and antibacterial abilities. Its antiviral properties help prevent viruses from replicating, while its antibacterial properties inhibit bacterial function. This same study showed that licorice exhibited antifungal activity. Topical licorice root cream is available to treat cold sores.
Herpes infections usually show no symptoms; when symptoms do appear they typically resolve within two weeks. The main symptom of oral infection is inflammation of the mucosa of the cheek and gums—known as acute herpetic gingivostomatitis—which occurs within 5–10 days of infection. Other symptoms may also develop, including headache, nausea, dizziness and painful ulcers—sometimes confused with canker sores—fever, and sore throat.
My cold sore is pretty much gone, however, the skin on my lip is still red and irritated. At night it tends to dry out and then it is worse in the morning again. How can I make this go away as soon as possible?
Manage your stress. Cold sore breakouts can increase stress and cause low self-esteem, anxiety and depression. By the same token, stress weakens our immune system and thus makes us more susceptible to developing viral infections, including herpes simplex. Some ways to manage stress include:

I decided to try the Tea Tree Oil remedy and took 4-5 lysine and I can’t believe I’m saying this, but it worked!!!! I felt that horrible tingle and I saw it was the size of a pimple and went online to find something else to try to get rid of it (since I’ve tried EVERYTHING). I read all the comments and went with the TTO and after two days it’s gone. This site just saved me from weeks of embarrassment and pain. You need to try the tea tree oil!
That’s not true. Viruses live in the spine and work alone nerve channels when immune system is suppressed. What you have to do is stay away from foods high in arginine and eat foods high in lysine because it looks just like arginine to the virus. The virus will pull it in and the lysine will deactivate it. It will help it stay dormant, but their is no cure for herpes simplex 1. Build up your immune systems
Children under 5 years old may have cold sores inside their mouths and the lesions are commonly mistaken for canker sores. Canker sores involve only the mucous membrane and aren’t caused by the herpes simplex virus.
I have a massive cold sore erupting from the corner of my mouth and has spread about and inch straight down. I am trying aspirin crushed mixed with alittle water made into a paste. So i will post how it works. Got the idea from a friend
Once the paste is thick enough but spreadable, apply a thin layer directly over the blister. Unlike toothpaste, you don’t have to leave it overnight for it to be effective. The solution will draw out acids from the affected area in just 5-10 minutes.
The toothpaste provides instant relief and dries up the cold sore in 24 hours. The salt works as an antiseptic. It can clean the sore and the entire affected area and speed up the healing process even more. Salt will sting a bit at first, but that shouldn’t last for too long.

The herpes virus can linger on objects for awhile, so it’s easy to catch it from something another person has used. Being aware of who in your life has a cold sore at any given time is important to prevent getting one yourself.
HSV infection causes several distinct medical disorders. Common infection of the skin or mucosa may affect the face and mouth (orofacial herpes), genitalia (genital herpes), or hands (herpetic whitlow). More serious disorders occur when the virus infects and damages the eye (herpes keratitis), or invades the central nervous system, damaging the brain (herpes encephalitis). People with immature or suppressed immune systems, such as newborns, transplant recipients, or people with AIDS, are prone to severe complications from HSV infections. HSV infection has also been associated with cognitive deficits of bipolar disorder, and Alzheimer’s disease, although this is often dependent on the genetics of the infected person.
Garlic is proven to contain antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal properties which can greatly help to treat fever blisters. Besides that, it has anti-inflammatory agents that reduce swelling and inflammation, speeding up the healing of cold sores (3). Slice a fresh garlic clove, crush one half, and then hold it against the affected area until the stinging goes away. If you want to reap maximum benefits, be sure to repeat the process 3 to 5 times a day.
Candidiasis – also known as “thrush,” it is a fungal infection that occurs in the mouth or throat due to an overgrowth of yeast. Symptoms include white spots inside the mouth or on the tongue, sore throat and difficulty swallowing.
If you choose to use honey as a home remedy for cold sores, you need to know about the specific kinds of honey. Raw honey is better because it contains certain enzymes. Many times, honey at supermarkets isn’t real honey. It’s a sugary syrup. Always look at the ingredient labels.

I had chronic cold sores – up to 2 or 3 a month – so my doctor prescribed me Acyclovir. I’ve been taking it twice a day for about 4 months now and haven’t had a single cold sore. However, I made the mistake of missing two doses and got a cold sore 🙁 I HIGHLY recommend going to your doctor and asking about Acyclovir. Good luck!!
Sometimes cold sores are confused with canker sores. Canker sores affect the inside of the mouth and are not caused by the herpes virus. In contrast to canker sores, cold sores usually develop on the lip not inside the mouth. The cause of canker sores is poorly understood, and canker sores are not contagious like cold sores.
After the first infection, the virus settles in a nearby nerve sheath and remains there for the rest of your life. For most of the time, the virus lies dormant (inactive) and causes no symptoms. However, in some people the virus becomes active from time to time. When activated, the virus multiplies and travels down the nerve sheath to cause cold sore blisters around the mouth. Some people have cold sores often, others only now and then. It is not clear what causes the dormant virus to become active. Some things that may trigger the virus to activate and cause a cold sore include:
The annual incidence in Canada of genital herpes due to HSV-1 and HSV-2 infection is not known (for a review of HSV-1/HSV-2 prevalence and incidence studies worldwide, see Smith and Robinson 2002). As many as one in seven Canadians aged 14 to 59 may be infected with herpes simplex type 2 virus and more than 90 per cent of them may be unaware of their status, a new study suggests. In the United States, it is estimated that about 1,640,000 HSV-2 seroconversions occur yearly (730,000 men and 910,000 women, or 8.4 per 1,000 persons).
When they are ill with infections, children often develop a fever. The fever with common viral illnesses, such as colds, coughs, sore throats and gastrointestinal illness, usually lasts a few days, makes children feel unwell, and is distressing for the children, their parents, or other caregivers.
A cold sore generally appears as a small, fluid-filled blister which goes through a cycle of phases. The blister will usually weep (ulcerate) and form a scab or ‘crusting’ before healing and disappearing completely.
