“home remedies for cold sores on the lip -how common are cold sores”

Herpes labialis, also called cold sores among other names, is a type of herpes simplex occurring on the lip, i.e. an infection caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV). An outbreak typically causes small blisters or sores on or around the mouth. The sores typically heal within 2 to 3 weeks, but the herpes virus remains dormant in the facial nerve branches, following orofacial infection, periodically reactivating (in symptomatic people) to create sores in the same area of the mouth or face at the site of the original infection.

That’s not true. Viruses live in the spine and work alone nerve channels when immune system is suppressed. What you have to do is stay away from foods high in arginine and eat foods high in lysine because it looks just like arginine to the virus. The virus will pull it in and the lysine will deactivate it. It will help it stay dormant, but their is no cure for herpes simplex 1. Build up your immune systems

Herpes simplex is a contagious oral virus. The virus is spread from person to person by kissing or other close contact with sores or even from contact with apparently normal skin that is shedding the virus. Infected saliva is also a means of spreading the virus. The most contagious period is when a person has active blister-like sores. Once the blisters have dried and crusted over (within a few days), the risk of contagion is significantly lessened. However, a person infected with HSV can pass it on to another person even when a cold sore is not present. This is because the virus is sometimes shed in saliva even when sores are not present. Despite popular myth, it is almost impossible to catch herpes (cold sores) from contaminated surfaces, towels, or washcloths.

Don’t Share Your Stuffs – If you’re thinking of home remedies, make sure you don’t share your towel, toothbrush, lip balm, lipstick or any personal items with anyone. Have separate utensils too. The cold sore virus can easily transmit to someone who uses your items.

Prescription-strength topical medications: Treatment with topical acyclovir (Zovirax 5% cream) or penciclovir (Denavir 1% cream) will reduce healing time by approximately half a day and decrease pain associated with the lesion. Topical treatment is limited in its effectiveness because it has poor penetration into the site of replication of the virus and therefore is restricted in its healing ability. Acyclovir cream should be applied five times per day for four days, and penciclovir cream should be applied every two hours while awake for four days.

Herpes simplex virus 1 is contagious from the first symptoms such as tingling sensation and itching stage until they turn into crusts. Don’t assume that it is safe even if you don’t feel any symptoms or the sore doesn’t appears. The herpes simplex virus can still infect innocent victims in the absence of symptoms. This is known as herpes viral shedding.

Direct sunlight or sunburns may trigger an attack, so using sunscreen or avoiding heavy sun exposure may reduce the number of cold sore recurrences that you experience. (8) Make sure to apply the sunscreen on the lips throughout the day, which can be done easily with a SPF lip balm. I suggest using lemon balm if you can.

According Dr. Craig Austin, a dermatologist in New York City, cold sores usually aren’t a sexually transmitted disease (STD). They are caused by the herpes simplex virus. There are two kinds of herpes virus: HSV-1, which is usually not an STD and occurs on the lip, and HSV-2, which usually causes herpes genitalis, which is essentially an STD in the genital area. Both viruses can be transmitted by saliva, body secretions or oral sex. If you contract either kind of herpes you will always have the virus because the cold sore lives in the sensory nerve and stays dormant in the nerve until outbreaks occur.

Herpes is contracted through direct contact with an active lesion or body fluid of an infected person.[26] Herpes transmission occurs between discordant partners; a person with a history of infection (HSV seropositive) can pass the virus to an HSV seronegative person. Herpes simplex virus 2 is typically contracted through direct skin-to-skin contact with an infected individual, but can also be contracted by exposure to infected saliva, semen, vaginal fluid, or the fluid from herpetic blisters.[27] To infect a new individual, HSV travels through tiny breaks in the skin or mucous membranes in the mouth or genital areas. Even microscopic abrasions on mucous membranes are sufficient to allow viral entry.

While other herbal remedies are an effective one-time treatment for cold sores, tea tree oil is considered the most reliable solution for recurrent attacks, which affect up to 40 percent of the population [26].

  1. Since baking soda is alkaline based, it balances the pH level of the skin. Baking soda is effective in killing the virus responsible for cold sores and prevent an outbreak of the condition. It can reduce itch and swellings of cold sores as well. [33]
First signs that a cold sore is imminent include pain, tenderness, burning and tingling. Within hours to days, a small, fluid-filled blister appears, which bursts, leaving a tiny, round ulcer which can take up to two weeks to heal. Cold sores are very easy to catch, from skin to skin, kissing or sexual contact. Transmission can occur even without sign of a blister.
