leanne..livs method may work for her but in the past anytime i already have a cold sore and i put on any type of chap stick type medication it makes the sores spread across my entire lips…makes sense to me if your touching something contagious and then spreading it around will spread them…my biggest help has always been fighting from the inside out….first l-lysine, daily up to 3000mg…second when and if they do break out you need an anti viral prescription from a dr…its a virus no other otc bs is going to work since it is a VIRUS…if you cant get to a dr or no insurance abreeva and alcohol…then maybe once it is a solid blister with NO redness around the outside maybe some otc stuff…but do not and i repeat do not spread it all over the area use a qtip and put it directly on the scab only!!!
Recurrent herpes occurs in the area where it first appeared, though most of the time, there are fewer blisters or a milder outbreak than the first time. Although the face is the most common site of infection, other areas of the body may be involved:
The initial outbreak of cold sores is usually most severe and can last up to two weeks. Recurrent outbreaks typically last about a week. Some over-the-counter creams or gels can offer pain relief, and some people find hot or cold compresses to be helpful in relief of burning and pain.
Coconut oil comes loaded with lots of benefits and treating cold sores is one of its specialties. When used in cooking, it can be treated as a health tonic with the potential of curing some serious fever blister outbreaks. In case, you are not in a habit of consuming coconut oil then use it orally.
Applying ice as soon as you feel that first tingle or itch will greatly reduce or delay the cold sore. Delaying the cold sore just a few days can get you through that important event. Any cold object will do – such as a can of Coke. The quicker, the better.
Keep other ingredients in mind if you discover a product that contains aloe vera. While many formulas containing aloe vera are all-natural, be sure to understand the ingredient list, so you know you don’t have an allergy to the formula. You’ll notice a soothing difference almost immediately.
Wash your hands frequently. Touching your sore with unwashed hands can lead to a bacterial infection, and you could also spread the sores to another area of your body. Use warm, soapy water to wash your hands often throughout the day.
If you’ve worked with cornstarch before you’ll be familiar with its fine, almost silky, texture-it seems like it could be soothing to a cold sore, doesn’t it? I would say so, and it can indeed help relieve the itchy burning pain of a sore when directly applied. The less obvious reason as to why cornstarch makes a pleasant home remedy for cold sores is the fact that it neutralizes the pH of the sore- the virus thrives in an overly-acidic environment-and creates an alkaline state (alkaline is the opposite of acidic.) To seek relief, and shorten the duration of your cold sore, simply whip up a silky-smooth cornstarch paste.
Antiviral creams containing aciclovir are widely available. If you start using them at the ‘tingle’ stage, they can shorten the outbreaks by 12 percent (from an average of 7 days down to 6 and a quarter days).
After three hours of incubation of herpes simplex virus with peppermint oil, an antiviral activity of about 99 percent was demonstrated. The oil proved to be more effective in the early stages of symptoms. (10)
Get a cortisone injection. A cortisone injection is a steroid injection that is injected at the site of your cold sore. It will cause the site to swell but then the cold sore should disappear within a few hours. Visit your doctor to get an injection of diluted cortisone to quickly get rid of the cold sore.
If you find that sunlight triggers your cold sores, try using sunscreen lip balm (SPF 15 or more) before going out into bright sunlight. This has been found to prevent some bouts of cold sores in some people. Do not share lip balms with other people if you have cold sores. Pots of sunscreen lip balm may be less convenient than lipsticks but minimise the risk of contamination of the product, if applied with a clean finger.
Healing (day 9–14): New skin begins to form underneath the scab as the virus retreats into latency. A series of scabs will form over the sore (called Meier Complex), each one smaller than the last. During this phase irritation, itching, and some pain are common.
Herpes and cold sores are most easily spread when a sore is present, but, the virus can also be spread at other times too. Some people notice itching, tingling or other sensations before they see anything on their skin.
Wrestlers’ herpes or herpes gladiatorum: Wrestlers or any athlete engaged in direct contact sports can contract herpes from an opponent who is shedding the virus. This form of herpes can appear anywhere over the body, but the face, neck, and arms are common locations. Unlike most other types of infection, lesions may occur at multiple sites.
Yes. When you have a cold sore you should not kiss anyone or allow anyone to come into skin contact with the sore. In particular, avoid kissing newborn babies and anyone who has a poor immune system (an immunocompromised person). Immunocompromised people include people having chemotherapy for cancer and people with conditions such as AIDS. Avoid oral sex until the cold sores have completely healed. When you have no symptoms – when the virus is dormant (inactive) – you are not usually infectious. Healthy people who already have cold sores cannot be re-infected.
Hydrogen peroxide acts as an effective disinfectant against causes for fever blisters. Studies indicate that a warm and moist environment much facilitate the effects of the herpes virus. Applying this ingredient keeps the infected area clean, dry, and free of moisture, thus providing a non-conducive environment that this virus can thrive.
Eventually, the blister or blisters will break open and begin to ooze fluid, and this can be quite painful. It will then dry out and crust over, creating a scab that protects the new skin growing underneath.
Take some White toothpaste not the gel kind apply it to the cold sore before you go to sleep or when you will not be seen by other people and let it stay on there for a few hours and it’s gone. Read more
A first cold sore usually occurs in childhood. The virus infects through the moist inner skin that lines the mouth. It is commonly passed on by skin contact such as kisses from a family member who has a cold sore. The first infection can cause no symptoms. See separate leaflet called Primary Cold Sore Infection for more details.
Apply witch hazel. Witch hazel has long been used for medicinal purposes, and it can be used to treat the symptoms of a cold sore. It works in a similar way to tea tree oil, naturally drying out the skin to aid healing. Simply dab a few drops of witch hazel extract onto the cold sore using a clean cotton ball once or twice a day.
Try not using open utensils, example open straws at restaurants that people put there hands on trying to grab one staw. Get simple cold sore medicine and apply to your lips once a month. If you feel your getting sick, apply to your lips everyday till you feel better. I have no sore for 2 yrs.

Right now I havn’t been diligent for about a year now and I seem to get these boogers about every 2-3 months now. If I have an outbreak I start taking the L-Lysine right away and take up to 4g/4000mg a day and it helps to either shorten and make the outbreak less intense, and other times it stops the outbreak right in its tracks.
you aren’t really supposed to use peroxide that often. just in the beginning when a sore first opens to clean it out. but after the first time that’s it. my mom always yells at me for overusing it, I just like the cool white bubbles it leaves on a wound to show it’s working. but once or twice, definitely enough
There is a risk of infecting the eyes with the cold sore virus if your contact lenses become contaminated. You can prevent this with careful handwashing before handling your contact lenses. If you have disposable lenses and you suspect you have contaminated them, it is probably best to throw them away. If you have any concerns, it may be better to wear your glasses and seek advice from your GP or optician (optometrist).
Vanilla extract, the real, good, pure, vanilla extract, is a natural cold sore remedy some people swear by. The thought process is that its alcohol based, and running along those lines, makes it hard for the virus to thrive and either wipes it out or lessens the severity and length of the outbreak. If you do use vanilla, try and get it organic, and try to start using it the second you feel the tingling set it.
Herpes can be spread from a cold sore to another area of the body, which is called “autoinoculation.” For example, touching a cold sore on the lip can cause herpes of the finger (herpetic whitlow). Autoinoculation occurs most commonly at the time of primary infection when viral shedding is high and the immune system is still gearing up to contain it. The antibodies that are made after primary infection are usually — but not always — successful in preventing autoinoculation during recurrent attack. To prevent spreading the virus to other parts of the body, it is important to wash hands after touching the sore. One question that is sometimes asked is Do cold sores cause genital herpes or are they contagious to genital areas? Although it is possible to autoinoculate the genital area, most cases of genital herpes are acquired through sexual transmission.
