  1. The first signs of a flare up include tingling, itching, or burning where the cold sore moves toward the skin. Parents might notice their child keeps touching or scratching a spot on the lip that starts to swell and redden before sores form.
    Wet the cold sore with the tip of a finger in some water. Now use that same finger to dip into the alum. Apply the alum directly to the cold sore and leave on for 30 seconds. Do not leave it on any longer, as it will dry your lips and cause cracking and scarring to occur. Rinse off with cold water. You can apply this three times a day for the extent of your outbreak.
    It’s important to note, however, that licorice has been reported to elevate blood pressure so those with cardiac or hypertension issues should only use small doses, or refrain from using this remedy [8].
