Wet the area with a Q-tip, then dip the Q-tip in either salt or baking soda and dab it onto the sore. Leave it there for several minutes as it absorbs and drains the fluid, then rinse. Repeat the process several times if needed. This may sting.
The virus is spread from person to person by kissing, by close contact with herpes lesions, or from saliva even when sores are not present. Infected saliva is a common means of virus transmission. The contagious period is highest when people have active blisters or moist sores. Once the blisters have dried and crusted over (within a few days), the risk of contagion is significantly lessened. HSV can also be spread through personal items that are contaminated with the virus, such as lipstick, utensils, and razors. Despite popular myth, catching herpes (cold sores) from surfaces, towels, or washcloths is a very low risk, since the virus does not usually survive long on dry surfaces.
This oil can help to reduce the size of your cold sore by as much as 50 percent overnight. This oil also helps to prevent it from getting bigger, and it also reduces pain due to its anti-inflammatory properties.
Cold sores, which are small and somewhat painful blisters that usually show up on or around a person’s lips, are caused by herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1). But they don’t just show up on the lips. They can sometimes be inside the mouth, on the face, or even inside or on the nose. These places are the most common, but sores can appear anywhere on the body, including the genital area.
After this first infection, the virus remains dormant (inactive) in the nerves of the face. In some people, the virus becomes active again from time to time. When this happens, cold sores appear. HSV-1 can get active again because of a cold or fever.

To help to prevent a first herpes infection in children do not let them be kissed by anyone who has cold sores, fever blisters or signs of a first herpes infection. However, HSV-1 is very common. Most children will be infected by the time they reach adulthood. Several different vaccines are being developed against HSV (types 1 and 2), but these appear to protect only people who have never been infected.
If your child develops a headache, combined with confusion, seizure or fever during a cold sore outbreak: This could signal a dangerous brain infection caused by the virus, including meningitis or encephalitis.
Research has shown that licorice root has antiviral and antibacterial abilities. Its antiviral properties help prevent viruses from replicating, while its antibacterial properties inhibit bacterial function. This same study showed that licorice exhibited antifungal activity. Topical licorice root cream is available to treat cold sores.
Once a cold sore appears there are different treatments that you can use to shorten the duration of the outbreak and heal the symptoms more quickly. Visit the Cold Sore Treatments page to read through different products that may be able to help.
Cold sores are painful fever blisters that appear inside the mouth, on lips, nose or even on the face. They are caused by the herpes simplex virus, which enters the body through the skin around the mouth. This virus is very contagious and spreads from one person to another through kissing, touching an infected person’s saliva, or sharing razors and eating utensils.
The toothpaste provides instant relief and dries up the cold sore in 24 hours. The salt works as an antiseptic. It can clean the sore and the entire affected area and speed up the healing process even more. Salt will sting a bit at first, but that shouldn’t last for too long.
