You can spread warts to other parts of your body, and they are contagious to others. If a treatment requires that you rub the wart with a fingernail file or a pumice stone, don’t use that utensil on any other part of your body, and don’t allow anyone else to use it.
Some types of HPV cause the kind of warts you see on people’s hands and feet. Genital warts, though, appear on or near the vulva, vagina, cervix, or anus in females; and on or near the penis, scrotum, or anus in males.
Diagnosing vaginal warts is a bit more complicated that diagnosing warts on the penis. In the former case, a doctor may be forced to carry out a pelvic examination. For the later, it mainly involves looking for bumps on the penis.
An HPV vaccine called Gardasil can protect men and women from the most common HPV strains that cause genital warts, and can also protect against strains of HPV that are linked to cervical cancer. A vaccine called Cervarix is also available. This vaccine protects against cervical cancer, but not against genital warts.
Destruction by scraping and burning the lesion; the wart area is numbed with a local anesthetic and then the doctor heats the tissue with an electric needle. The dead tissue is then scraped away with a curette ( a type of surgical tool).
You can get the virus and never actually get warts, so you could be infected and not have any symptoms. Some people only get warts once, and then never get them again. Some people have warts develop more than once (recurring).
Sometimes, lesions are only visible with an enhancing technique called acetowhitening. This technique involves the application of 5% acetic acid solution to the area of suspicion for about 5-10 minutes. Infected areas will turn white.
There are three vaccines approved to protect against HPV. Gardasil protects against infection from four strains of the HPV virus and offers modest protection against genital warts. Two of these strains, HPV-16 and HPV-18, account for about 70% of cervical cancers. The other two strains covered by the vaccine, HPV- 6 and HPV-11, account for about 90% of genital warts. The vaccine is approved for 9- to 26-year-old females and males.
Genital warts: Before HPV vaccines were introduced, roughly 340,000 to 360,000 women and men were affected by genital warts caused by HPV every year.* Also, about one in 100 sexually active adults in the U.S. has genital warts at any given time.
If you have had genital warts, you should be tested for cervical cancer at least once every year. Cervical cancer can be prevented with regular screening (Pap smears), and can be cured in most cases when it is detected in early stages.

Handling meat as an occupation will also increase the risk of contracting warts. A study carried out by the American Academy of Family Physicians showed that 33 percent of slaughterhouse workers and 34 percent of retail butchers have warts on the hand.
A study at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein in the Republic of South Africa linked the development of oral warts caused by HPV to deficiencies in essential fatty acids, manganese, magnesium, and zinc.

Genital warts can cause problems in pregnant women, especially if the warts keep on growing to the point where they make it difficult or painful to urinate. Additionally, warts can pose an additional threat to the mother’s health during childbirth as they can make it harder for the tissue to stretch (i.e. the mother might need a cesarean). If you suspect you have genital warts, but are to visit your doctor, you can use our free assessment service.

HPV can be a tricky STD to understand. It’s the most common STD, but most of the time it goes away on its own. Sometimes certain types of “high-risk” HPV can develop into cancer if left untreated. Other “low-risk” types of HPV can cause warts on your vulva, vagina, cervix, rectum, anus, penis or scrotum. Genital warts are common — about 360,000 people get them each year.
Genital warts may occur singly but are more often found in clusters. They may be found anywhere in the anal or genital area, and are frequently found on external surfaces of the body, including the penile shaft, scrotum, or labia majora of the vagina. They can also occur on internal surfaces like the opening to the urethra, inside the vagina, on the cervix, or in the anus.
All individuals who engage in sexual activity (that is nearly every human being) are at risk of acquiring HPV infection. It is without doubt the most common sexually transmitted infection in the world. Since the virus is transmitted through skin-to-skin contact, it is important to note that penetration is not essential for the transmission of the virus between individuals. Genital to genital contact is sufficient to enable transmission of the virus. The infection rate of HPV in South Africa is unknown, but it is estimated that about 100 000 to 200 000 new cases are found every year. Infection rates of 5% to 10% are common among young adults. Sophisticated analysis finds HPV DNA (genetic material) in the cells of 25% to 50% of all patients attending gynaecology clinics.
Immunotherapy medicines, which help your body’s immune system fight viruses, including the human papillomavirus (HPV) that causes warts. These medicines may include imiquimod, contact sensitizers, and interferon.
Foot pain may be caused by injuries (sprains, strains, bruises, and fractures), diseases (diabetes, Hansen disease, and gout), viruses, fungi, and bacteria (plantar warts and athlete’s foot), or even ingrown toenails. Pain and tenderness may be accompanied by joint looseness, swelling, weakness, discoloration, and loss of function. Minor foot pain can usually be treated with rest, ice, compression, and elevation and OTC medications such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen. Severe pain should be treated by a medical professional.
Plane warts have a flat surface. The most common sites are the face, hands and shins. They are often numerous. They may be inoculated by shaving or scratching, so that they appear in a linear distribution (pseudo-Koebner response). Plane warts are mostly caused by HPV types 3 and 10.
Problems during pregnancy. Genital warts may cause problems during pregnancy. Warts could enlarge, making it difficult to urinate. Warts on the vaginal wall may reduce the ability of vaginal tissues to stretch during childbirth. Large warts on the vulva or in the vagina can bleed when stretched during delivery.
Herpes simplex infections are common and when they appear around the mouth and lips, people often refer to them as “cold sores” and “fever blisters.” Canker sores are different than cold sores. Air droplets can spread the virus, as can direct contact with the fluid from the blisters. Cold sore treatment include over-the-counter medication, as well as prescription medications.
Some experts recommend that men who have receptive anal sex should have a routine anal Pap test, especially if they are also HIV positive. Talk with your health care provider to find out what is best for you.
True story: Oral sex can lead to genital warts in your mouth or throat, though Minkin says these warts often go undetected. A bigger issue when it comes to oral sex and HPV is your risk of contracting HPV-related oral cancer, which is rising fast among young women (and is caused by a different strain of HPV than the one that leads to warts).
Another product available over-the-counter that can aid in wart removal is silver nitrate in the form of a caustic pencil, which is also available at drug stores. In a placebo-controlled study of 70 patients, silver nitrate given over nine days resulted in clearance of all warts in 43% and improvement in warts in 26% one month after treatment compared to 11% and 14%, respectively, in the placebo group. The instructions must be followed to minimize staining of skin and clothing. Occasionally pigmented scars may develop.
Warts are skin growths that are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). There are more than 60 kinds of HPV, some of which tend to cause warts on the skin. HPV stimulates quick growth of cells on the skin’s outer layer. In most cases, common warts appear on the fingers, near the fingernails, or on the hands. Certain types of HPV can also cause warts to appear in the genital area.
