Consult your doctor about surgical options. Your doctor may suggest these options when large numbers of warts are present or a large area is affected. Your doctor may also recommend one of these options if you’ve had several recurrences of HPV warts.

You can get some wart remedies without a prescription and treat the warts yourself. This may be enough to get rid of the warts. The only problem with self-treatment is that you might mistake another kind of skin growth for a wart. Some skin cancers look like warts.

Podofilox — This is the preferred treatment for lesions less than 10 cm². To ensure correct usage (0.5 ml or 0.5g), your doctor will show you how much and how to apply the medication. Apply to the area using a cotton swab if liquid or finger if gel. Repeat for three consecutive days twice a day followed by four days of no treatment. Repeat this process for up to four weeks.

Avoid over-the-counter treatments. It is advised not to apply any over-the-counter remedies to the genital area. The genital skin is very sensitive and delicate and applying chemicals without proper knowledge and training can lead to damage.

Common warts present as  papules with a rough, papillomatous and hyperkeratotic surface ranging in size from 1 mm to larger than 1 cm. They arise most often on the backs of fingers or toes, around the nails—where they can distort nail growth—and on the knees. Sometimes they resemble a cauliflower; these are known as butcher’s warts.

Most people with genital warts are between the ages of 17-33 years. Genital warts are highly contagious. There is high risk of getting the infection from a single sexual contact with someone who has genital warts.

Some practitioners use an acetic acid solution to identify smaller warts (“subclinical lesions”), but this practice is controversial.[9] Because a diagnosis made with acetic acid will not meaningfully affect the course of the disease, and cannot be verified by a more specific test, a 2007 UK guideline advises against its use.[13]

Watchful waiting is a period of time during which you and your doctor observe your symptoms or condition without using medical treatment. It is often appropriate treatment for warts, because they generally go away on their own within months or years. But you may want to consider treating a wart to prevent it from spreading to other parts of your body or to other people. You can try a non-prescription wart treatment for 2 to 3 months before deciding to see a doctor.

Several randomized, controlled trials have found that zinc sulfate, consumed orally, often reduces or eliminates warts.[25][26][27] The zinc sulfate dosage used in medical trials for treatment of warts was between 5 and 10 mg/kg/day. For elemental zinc, a lower dosage of 2.5 mg/kg/day may be appropriate as large amounts of zinc may cause a copper deficiency.[25] Other trials have found that topical zinc sulfate solution[28] or zinc oxide[29] are also effective.

Genital warts may occur singly but are more often in clusters.[citation needed] They may be found anywhere in the anal or genital area, and are frequently found on external surfaces of the body, including the penile shaft, scrotum, or labia majora of the vagina. They can also occur on internal surfaces like the opening to the urethra, inside the vagina, on the cervix, or in the anus.[8]

  1. Estimates suggest that half of sexually active people have been infected with a type of HPV once in their lives, but not everyone sees warts. Some people manage to fight the virus off or to contain it. People with a low immune system find it harder to fight the virus and so are more likely to see warts.
Podofilox is an antimitotic drug that destroys warts, is relatively inexpensive, easy to use, safe, and self-applied. Podofilox solution should be applied with a cotton swab, or podofilox gel with a finger, to visible genital warts twice a day for 3 days, followed by 4 days of no therapy. This cycle can be repeated, as necessary, for up to four cycles. The total wart area treated should not exceed 10 cm2, and the total volume of podofilox should be limited to 0.5 mL per day. If possible, the health-care provider should apply the initial treatment to demonstrate the proper application technique and identify which warts should be treated. Mild to moderate pain or local irritation might develop after treatment. The safety of podofilox during pregnancy has not been established.
Genital warts appear as painless, flesh-coloured or greyish-white growths on the vulva (along the greater and lesser labia – the lips – at the entrance to the vagina), anus or penis. They can be so small that they are only visible under a microscope, or they may gain a cauliflower-like appearance, which can be unsightly, itchy or mildly painful. When very large or extensive, they can even prevent intercourse or childbirth. When they infect the vagina, a discharge can develop and there may be painful intercourse. In men the warts may appear as tiny growths around the tip or shaft of the penis.
