Artificial urinary sphincter. In men, a small, fluid-filled ring is implanted around the bladder neck to keep the urinary sphincter shut until you’re ready to urinate. To urinate, you press a valve implanted under your skin that causes the ring to deflate and allows urine your bladder to flow.

Spinal cord injuries interrupt the sacral reflex arc from the suprasacral spinal cord, cerebral cortex, and higher centers. These pathways are crucial for voluntary and involuntary inhibition. In the initial phase of spinal cord injury, the bladder is areflexic and overflow incontinence results. Later, detrusor hyperreflexia usually is found upon urodynamic evaluation.

Kegel exercises. These exercises help strengthen the muscles around the bladder and urethra to improve bladder control and reduce urinary urgency and frequency. Exercising pelvic muscles for five minutes three times a day can make a difference in bladder control.

Extra weight can also increase the pressure on your bladder and cause stress incontinence. Stress incontinence is when urine leaks after you do something that increases pressure on the bladder, like laughing, sneezing, or lifting. While eating healthy foods can help you lose excess weight, getting regular exercise like strength training can help with long-term management.

Your doctor will physically examine you for signs of medical conditions causing incontinence, including treatable blockages from bowel or pelvic growths. In addition, weakness of the pelvic floor leading to incontinence may cause a condition called prolapse, where the vagina or bladder begins to protrude out of your body. This condition is also important to diagnose at the time of an evaluation.

Urinary urgency describes a sudden and uncontrollable desire to urinate even when the bladder isn’t full. In some cases, this urgency can make it difficult to reach a bathroom in time, leading to UUI.

Some hypothesize that under normal circumstances, any increase in intra-abdominal pressure is transmitted equally to the bladder and proximal urethra. This is likely due to the retropubic location of the proximal and mid urethra within the sphere of intra-abdominal pressure. At rest, the urethra has a higher intrinsic pressure than the bladder. This pressure gradient relationship is preserved if acute increases in intra-abdominal pressure are transmitted equally to both organs.

Research shows that women who are overweight and have incontinence had less episodes of OAB. One study found that women with obesity who lose 10 percent of their body weight saw improved bladder control by 50 percent.

If you need to go to the toilet more than usual, it’s known as frequent urination. It usually involves going to the loo more than 8 times a day. You may also wake up frequently at night needing to go. Symptoms often include bladder discomfort and a strong, urgent need to wee.

Continence and micturition involve a balance between urethral closure and detrusor muscle activity. Urethral pressure normally exceeds bladder pressure, resulting in urine remaining in the bladder. The proximal urethra and bladder are both within the pelvis. Intra abdominal pressure increases (from coughing and sneezing) are transmitted to both urethra and bladder equally, leaving the pressure differential unchanged, resulting in continence. Normal voiding is the result of changes in both of these pressure factors: urethral pressure falls and bladder pressure rises.

Each Oopsie incontinence kit is small enough to fit in a woman’s purse and contains a disposable pair of underwear, sanitary wipes and a discreet bag for soiled undergarments and a pre-soak powder to absorb odors and stains.

During pregnancy, a woman’s uterus expands. This can put pressure on your bladder and cause sudden urges to urinate, or incontinence. You might also experience incontinence after childbirth, due to weakened pelvic floor muscles. This is a common cause of OAB-like symptoms and is treatable with Kegel exercises and other therapies designed to strengthen your muscles.

Kegel exercises: These are exercises in which you contract and release the pelvic floor muscles. These are the muscles you use when you voluntarily stop and then restart the flow of urine. Toning these muscles can help improve bladder control and reduce urinary urgency and frequency. Squeeze for three seconds, then relax for three seconds. Repeat 10 to 15 times per session, and do this at least three times a day. Kegel exercises are only effective when done regularly.

ACE Inhibitors and Angiotensin Receptor Blockers: The renin-angiotensin system exists specifically in the bladder and the urethra. Blocking angiotensin receptors with ACE inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers decreases both detrusor overactivity and urethral sphincter tone, leading to reduced urge incontinence and increased stress urinary incontinence.29 Furthermore, ACE inhibitors can result in a chronic dry cough that can cause stress incontinence. This was demonstrated in a female patient with cystocele who was receiving enalapril. The patient developed a dry cough and stress incontinence, which ceased within 3 weeks of discontinuing the ACE inhibitor.

Changing when you drink. You should try to maintain a normal life as much as possible with regard to drinking and visiting the toilet. However, drinking late at night may mean your sleep is disturbed by the desire to get up and go to the toilet.

Astronauts wear trunklike diapers called “Maximum Absorbency Garments”, or MAGs, during liftoff and landing. On space shuttle missions, each crew member receives three diapers—for launch, re-entry and a spare in case re-entry has to be waved off and tried later. The super-absorbent fabric used in disposable diapers, which can hold up to 400 times its weight, was developed so Apollo astronauts could stay on spacewalks and extra-vehicular activity for at least six hours. Originally, only female astronauts would wear Maximum Absorbency Garments, as the collection devices used by men were unsuitable for women; however, reports of their comfort and effectiveness eventually convinced men to start wearing the diapers as well. Public awareness of astronaut diapers rose significantly following the arrest of Lisa Nowak, a NASA astronaut charged with attempted murder, who gained notoriety in the media when the police reported she had driven 900 miles, with an adult diaper so she would not have to stop to urinate. The diapers became fodder for many television comedians, as well as being included in an adaptation of the story in Law & Order: Criminal Intent, despite Nowak’s denial that she wore them.

Diabetes is a chronic condition characterized by high levels of sugar (glucose) in the blood. The two types of diabetes are referred to as type 1 (insulin dependent) and type 2 (non-insulin dependent). Symptoms of diabetes include increased urine output, thirst, hunger, and fatigue. Treatment of diabetes depends on the type.

It has long been suggested that legislators don a diaper before an extended filibuster, so often that it has been jokingly called “taking to the diaper.” There has certainly been at least one such instance, in which Strom Thurmond gave a record-holding 24 hours and 18 minute speech.
