While jock itch is frequently noted in otherwise healthy people, those with diabetes and/or obesity are more susceptible. Possible causes include irritation from tight or abrasive underwear, excess moisture, sweating, skin rubbing or friction, allergic problems, fungal infection, Candida (yeast) infection, and bacterial overgrowth.
You can increase the benefit of any of these by using an anti-fungal soap when showering (we rated Defense Soap as the best in this epic review). Also remember that consistency is key. No product will kill that itch if you don’t use it regularly for the recommended time period so stick to the instructions and smash your jock itch for good!
In most cases, your best best is to treat the infection with a combination of antifungal shampoo and antifungal product containing stuff like tolfnaftate, terbinafine, or clotrimazole. These are the active ingredients in products like Tinactin or Lotrimin. Generic versions of these drugs are much cheaper and work just as well.

Its application is considered an effective remedy for various skin-related ailments including Jock Itch or Tinea Cruris, skin irritation and discoloration, other fungal infections, cracked skin, and itching.
The biggest risk of jock itch rashes would be posed from the risk of secondary infections. Home remedies for jock itch relief and over the counter medicated products like soothing antifungal creams or antifungal jock itch powders can help provide considerable relief and are an important aspect of treatment because the intense itching can cause you to give in to the urge to scratch at the skin. Scratching can cause severe bruising and lesions in the affected skin allowing for infections, sores and ulcers to develop.
Apply over-the-counter anti-fungal creams or powders recommended for jock itch. Follow the regimen outlined in the accompanying instructions. Be careful not to over-treat the area, as this can lead to further irritation.
With its extra strong formula, Pro-Ex Antifungal Cream Clotrimazole 1% is the cream you should turn to for more severe cases of jock itch. While it does contain just the same amount of clotrimazole as the previous product, it’s specially formulated with several other inactive ingredients to address more serious cases of jock itch irritation.
The fungus causing jock itch starts developing when the moist area of the body becomes too warm and starts sweating. Tight undergarments or tight clothes may aggravate the symptoms of jock itch. People having diseases like AIDS and diabetes are more prone to it because of their weak immune system. Jock itch is mildly contagious, so you may get infected if you come in contact with another person suffering from it. Avoid sharing personal belongings with the infected person. If you have other fungal infections like athletes foot then it may also cause jock itch.
If you also have athlete’s foot, treat it at the same time you are treating your jock itch. This will reduce the risk of recurrence. If jock itch is severe or doesn’t respond to over-the-counter medicine, you may need prescription-strength creams or ointments — or even antifungal pills.
An infrequent complication can arise if jock itch rash spreads past the groin onto the thighs and genitals. Secondly, scratching or rubbing of the skin can deepen the infection causing cellulitis or abscess formation.

Ultra Cream? It has a nice ring to it. Before we even took a look at this one, we were set to feel some ultra comfort. As the name suggests, this is a cream based product. It’s active ingredient is Butenafine Hydrochloride Cream 1%. The first thing we like about this product is that is intended to used only once daily. This means you won’t have to worry about having your hands down your pants all day!
You can usually self-diagnose jock itch by how your skin looks. If you feel the need to check in with your health care provider or dermatologist, call to make an appointment. Tests are usually not necessary. However, you may need an office test called a KOH exam or a skin culture. Don’t worry — these tests are very simple and relatively painless, but they may help better identify the severity and diagnosis.
If you have an impaired immune system (e.g., from having diabetes, HIV/AIDS, or atopic dermatitis – a chronic, genetic skin condition characterized by itchy, inflamed skin and associated with asthma and seasonal allergies), you may be more likely to get jock itch. This happens because the skin barriers that normally protect you from viral, bacterial and fungal infections become compromised. Use extra care to prevent and treat jock itch, and watch out for any potential complications when you get jock itch. You should also see your doctor and ask about a daily anti-fungal oral medication as a preventative measure if you are at risk.
There are theories about underwear. Probably cotton is better than synthetic and for women avoidance of pantyhose if you do have the fungal rash is helpful. But the more important thing is just avoiding direct rubbing on it. So that’s where the boxer shorts or the French type underwear can be more beneficial if you do have a fungal rash at the groin.
Being that the condition occurs along the groin and inner thighs where sweating is more exaggerated, any cream that’s the wrong consistency can easily cause an uncomfortable sticky sensation that could throw anyone off.
This can be a relaxing way to achieve relief and healing. Add two cups of oatmeal and one cup of Epsom salt to a bath tub filled with warm water. Soak your body in the tub for about 20 minutes. Make sure the water is not too hot since hot water can cause itchy skin and you want to avoid further irritation. As a bonus for some added healing and relaxation, you can add 10–20 drops of lavender oil! (7)
Jock itch is caused by a ringworm fungal infection. This fungus is highly contagious and can be spread easily from person to person through use of shared clothing and towels. The infection can also live on surfaces like exercise equipment, making it very easy to become infected.
Treatment is relatively straight forward and similar to athlete’s foot. Pretty much all the remedies are available over the counter and we’re talking about anti-fungal type creams. Generally a cream is going to be the best one in that area. An ointment obviously is an alternative, but generally lotions and sprays not so much used in that area of the body.
Natural Alternatives. Medicated creams are often the most effective for resolving jock itch. These products contain ample dosages of chemically-based active ingredients that are tested and developed in labs and clinics for maximum efficacy.
While jock itch itself is not serious, it can be a persistent and recurrent problem that causes discomfort and itching. It does not cause any long-term damage, but the rash and other related rashes such as athlete’s foot have a tendency to recur if proper preventive measures have not been taken.
Jock itch usually begins with mild intermittent itching the groin. The itching can get worse and become unbearable in some cases. The rash is usually on both sides of the groin and affects the folds.
Jock itch (tinea cruris) is a form of ringworm. Ringworm is not a worm at all. It is a fungal infection of the outer layers of skin, hair, or nails. Fungi (plural of fungus) are present everywhere in our environment.
Wash your underwear and athletic supporter frequently. Also, never share your towels or any of your clothing with other people, especially during the active stage of the infection. Jock itch can spread by contact with unwashed clothing or athletic cups.
Wash the affected area with an antifungal soap. Dry it well with a separate towel, if it does not dry well, use either a blower or a fan. Apply pure honey on the area. Let it dry for about 30 mins to an hour. Wash it off again using antifungal soap. Dry it well and apply antifungal power over the affected area. Wear a loose pure cotton shorts. Scratching when it itchs only makes it worse so wash it off immediately to avoid itching. Repeat the procedure whenever it itch. Thanks for this site. Let us keep on posting our experiences for the future to be affected jock itch people lol. I wish this annoying disease disappear forever.
Now add some TEA TREE OIL, I Do about 30 Drops to 1 Cup of Oil. You can do More or Less. Essential oils are powerful and you need to consider that when adding to your infused oil. You can always add some more drops, but you can not take away from your mixture. Then, I add some Vitamin E, Some Carrot Seed Oil and some Rosehip Oil. I blend well.
