As the common name for this condition implies, it causes itching or a burning sensation in the groin area, thigh skin folds or anus. It may involve the inner thighs and genital areas, as well as extending back to the perineum and perianal areas.
If your jock itch rash begins to ooze, call your doctor. This may be an indication that the rash may be secondarily infected with bacteria. If your doctor confirms that it is, you may be given an antibiotic.
I’ve had jock itch/athletes foot fungus since 1992. Nothing has ever worked other than a short term cure. I’m now 60 years old. As I sleep I scratch and spread it all over my body. I am covered from head to toe with it. I live in Arizona and it’s heating up here. Last night my rectum was itching and in my sleep I spread it everywhere. Today it is flared up even on my head, my ears, and every part of my body.
Another potential complication temporary skin discoloration called post-inflammatory hypopigmentation (lighter than the regular skin color) or hyperpigmentation (darker then the regular skin color). This altered skin color may occur after the rash has improved or after a temporary flare. Permanent scarring is uncommon.
Coconut oil, even the cooking variety will stop jock itch, and it’s even better at keeping it from coming back. Apply the oil 4-6 times daily for an outbreak and twice daily for prevention. Most of us, once we have had jock itch, it’s always lurking just under the skin to break out again, it’s the hot humid weather you have to worry about most.
Keep in mind that itching and rashes in the groin area and especially on the genitals may be the result of something requiring medical attention, such as a yeast infection or sexually transmitted infection (STI). Consult a health care provider for a correct diagnosis because treatments will vary depending on what you have. Having said that, the symptoms of jock itch are:
I have this itch joke for about a year on and off I tried all counter anti fungal cream but didn’t work I just read all the comments here and some home remedy so I mixed garlic unions white vinegar tooth paste rock salt hydrogen peroxide and alcohol and I put it now used cotton balls I scratch for a while and it’s too hot I wish it will work now thanks a lot for all the suggestion here
So, jock itch, a fungal infection. Quite harmless, a bit of a nuisance certainly. Relatively easy to treat, generally with over the counter preparations. As always, if symptoms do persist for more than two or three weeks, worth going along and having a chat with your GP.
Tinea cruris (dermatophyte infection – a kind of fungal infection also called jock itch): This is an itchy, irritable rash in the groin area that mostly affects men. It is typically associated with sweating and tight clothing.
Another option is to apply a mixture of equal parts of white vinegar and coconut oil on the affected skin. Leave it on for a few hours before washing it off. Do this twice daily until you get rid of the problem.
Ringworm of the skin appears as a rash with patches that may be red or peeling or that have bumps on the edges that look like blisters. The skin often is itchy, and the rash can spread quickly. You can have both jock itch and athlete’s foot (tinea pedis) at the same time.
Jock itch is caused by a ringworm fungal infection. This fungus is highly contagious and can be spread easily from person to person through use of shared clothing and towels. The infection can also live on surfaces like exercise equipment, making it very easy to become infected.
Your family doctor or a skin specialist (dermatologist) can diagnose jock itch. Because appointments can be brief and there’s often a lot of ground to cover, it can help to be well-prepared. Here are some tips to help you get ready for your appointment and what to expect from your doctor.
A combined anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory treatment for jock itch to attack the cause of the infection and soothe the associated itch, inflammation, pain and redness. Apply twice a day for no more than 7 days, followed by an anti-fungal cream for 14 days, such as Canesten Clotrimazole, to complete the treatment and avoid recurrence.
Okay, how do you catch it? It is a fungus, it’s a very ubiquitous fungus, so it’s something that is in the atmosphere, in fact there are some theories that it can live quietly on the body just in the normal course of events but can multiply given the right circumstances. So again, heat and sweating creates a warm, moist environment that does make it a little bit easier for the fungus to multiply.
Moisture is the critical factor with jock itch because it allows fungi to thrive. Since people wear clothing for most of the day, the groin is usually moist and dark, creating a perfect breeding ground for the microscopic fungi that live on the skin to multiply and cause trouble. People who exercise regularly and wear an athletic supporter (jock strap) are susceptible to jock itch if they don’t bathe after exercise or don’t wash the undergarments they wear for exercise before working out again.
Jock itch usually begins with mild intermittent itching in the groin. The itching can get worse and become unbearable in some cases. The rash is usually on both sides of the groin and affects the folds.
As I’ve answered in other post, the better solution is prevention over treatment. Dry after showers. Most importantly, change your underwear after heavy perspiration activities. To increase breathability and reduce moisture wear linen (flax) underwear. Only wear synthetic underwear during sports activities, otherwise avoid them as they allow bacteria and fungus to grow.
A fungus is a microscopic plant-like organism that thrives in damp, warm environments. Fungi usually aren’t dangerous. But when they infect the skin, they cause mild but annoying rashes (also known as tinea infections).
AS a volunteer in hospice we have classes on patient care all the time ,jock itch away comes up because it’ a big problem(/Hospice is to care for your love so they can die at home) I always pay close attention to these classes because I can use the cure for jock on my self
Had the jock itch for bout two weeks didnt even know what it was. I was just scratchin away. I Google the symptoms and found out the name. Read a couple of remedies, blah blah blah. just use some honey and garlic powder that’s right. Mix well and apply to the area. Feel the burn for about seven mins. Then no burn. Wash whenever you desire then do same procedure over and over until its gone I did it for a whole day. And next day never had it again. Its really works. You just gonna have the garlic nuts smell.
This is one more effective cream available. If you are suffering from itch and rashes, you will wonder what cream to use for jock itch. Here is the best way. Apply this for a week. You can expect relief. Apply the cream and leave it open for some time. That would reduce the infection to a great extent. The best itch cream with no side effects.

Tinea Cruris, commonly known as Jock Itch, is a highly contagious skin infection caused by various types of fungus, similar to those that cause athlete’s foot. It infects the surrounding areas of the groin and inner thighs.
1st before shower, take borax and put in a container to mix, the glad container works fine, just make sure it’s big enough for the next steps, I go by feel so I don’t have measurements but you don’t need a lot – depending on the area a handfull of Borax or so should do just fine. Again I go by feel for the next step – about a quarter sized or so amount add Selsun Blue Shampoo – Use the name brand and a splash of hot water. Now Mix until you get the consistency of a Meringue (lemon meringue pie) *Caution, when you mix it it has an amonia smell so I’m not sure with the chemical consistency if I am mixing an amonia base type paste, it will sting a little so if you are sensitive and low pain tolorence or sensitive skin I advise caution ( i put caution to the wind with this, as anyone who is suffering knows). Leave on for 3 – 5 minutes – make sure you have a towel underneath or stand in the tub it is grainy and will flake off. Lightly massage onto the problem areas – If it’s blistered or opened I wouldn’t massage it I would let it rinse off without scrubbing. – again it will sting a litttle for a while. Now shower as usual. Out of the shower towel off then grab the Hair dryer and dry all the parts front and back – as much heat and air as you can take – be careful not to burn. 2nd step after you are completely dry – ORGANIC Apple Cider Vinegar add a splash of hot water or more – this will sting as well – do not put on stright – strength to what you can tolerate. Again make sure you have a towel underneath or in the tub and open a window – you’ll know why if you try this – dab on with cotton balls to the affected area(s) and let it dry – do not dry it off. The smell on your “parts” will dissipate – keep in mind if you are only 5 mins from work give it about 20 mins for the smell to go away.
Thanks for all the recommendations, I have almost scratched by junk off at times, have had this issue for over two years !, doctors prescriptions were useless, sprayed cologne liberally for a one minute pain rush, some relief afterwards. Gonna give the garlic a try now. Soaking in the ocean provides some relief but short-lived. I am going to be 50 soon, hard to find a place to hide to scratch and not look like a old perv, lol.
The fungus that causes jock itch thrives in warm, moist areas and occurs mostly in adult men and teenage boys. It can be triggered by friction from clothes and prolonged wetness in the groin area, such as from sweating. Is jock itch contagious? Technically yes, as it can be passed from one person to the next by direct skin-to-skin contact or contact with unwashed clothing, such as bathing suits, that have been touched or shared. If you have athlete’s foot, it can even be passed by touching your own feet or socks, then touching your groin area.
If your jock itch is very mild or you’ve caught it early on, you might be able to treat it by washing the affected area twice a day withan antifungal shampoo or soap like Selsun Blue or the delightfully-named Funga Soap.
Now, clean the affected area well, with an antibacterial soap or a soap container tea tree oil in it. Dry Well. Take a cotton ball and apply gently dabs of Apple Cider Vinegar WITH THE MOTHER-Yes, it needs to be WITH the MOTHER. Braggs sells this, and I think one other kind does too. You can find this in most walmarts. Let dry naturally OR blow dry gently on the cool setting.
